Summary
- For a large bust, V neck with straps are the most supportive
- A Square neckline offers a flattering look by opening the chest area
- The appropriate cup size is important in a proper fitting gown
- The neckline style must take into account not only a full bust, but the body shape as well
- A wrap dress is universally flattering on all body types with fuller bustlines
The Right Neckline For A Large Bust
Finding the best wedding dress necklines for a large bust is easy when you know what to look for. A bride with a bigger bust will look beautiful in a number of neck lines, as long as they have good support, work with your body frame, and are tailored properly.
Think: visual balance.
Higher necklines add bulkiness to the frame. Open necks will de-emphasize the top while enhancing the overall look.
Look at the difference in the ‘visual weight’ of these two gowns:

Opening up the chest area is the way to minimize the visual weight of a large bust. Let’s look at some options.
The V-Neck Wedding Dress

A V-neck with a moderate depth plunge is the perfect neckline to lengthen the torso and add a balanced look. A 1-inch strap will give lift and lovely support which will add to defining the waist. This style neckline allows for great movement yet keeps everything in place!
The V-neck can also come in varying degrees of plunge. Too much plunge can become revealing and less supportive.
The Square Neckline Wedding Dress For A Large Bust

The square neckline is an outstanding choice, offering a straight line that will give good support visually and will often include wider straps. The square neck is very on trend too! Straps (and strap thickness) or strapless depends on the broadness of the shoulders.
Broad shoulders look more narrow with dainty spaghetti straps. Try different kinds to see what flatters you/your shoulders and bust line best.
The Sweetheart Neckline

A sweetheart shape creates a soft curve over the bust, which is very romantic. This works best with a very structured bodice, including corsetting for great lift. The sweetheart must be tailored with the proper cup size so that the look remains feminine without revealing too much.
Scoop Necklines For A Large Bust

For those who are looking for a softer visual than the square or straight across. Lower necklines like Scoop necks will still provide coverage yet feel feminine, especially the trendy cat-eye shape, and de-emphasize a large bust. Three-quarter and long sleeves are perfectly acceptable and flattering! With a scoop, bodice support is essential and if it goes too deep, it may not be as supportive for those with ample busts.
Body Types And A Large Chest
For an apple body shape with a large bust, V-neck and Sweetheart are ideal because they create vertical lines to elongate the torso, draw attention upward, and open up the chest area and collarbone. These open necklines provide balance and avoid the boxy, top-heavy look that high or narrow necklines can create.

For pear-shaped figures with wide hips, the best dress necklines are also those that draw attention upward to the shoulders and bust. The bust also being large needs to be lifted and the torso elongated to balance out the lower body creating a more hourglass shape. Similar to the apple shape, you want to visually widen the upper body. V-necks, square necks, and off-the-shoulder necklines are great options. Those lovely off-the-shoulder straps will also help widen narrow shoulders! Boat and cowl necks are also ideal.
An Athletic body type can usually go for high necklines like a halter neck, especially if you want to show off the shoulders! An athletic build tends to be lean and muscular and the best necklines for this shape with a large bust are pretty open. Height may play a part in the best look (think basketball player vs. gymnast) so try on different styles and silhouettes to see what matches your height and build best.
Wrap Dresses. If you find a wrap wedding dress, try it! A very good option with a natural V shape and universally flattering by creating a longer, slimmer look on any body type.
Watch Out For
- High necks like halter, boat neck, high collar, or a crew neckline will accentuate the bust, especially if there is not enough structure.
- Strapless dresses without enough internal structure. These won’t have enough holding power.
- Very low plunges. These may not provide enough coverage for fuller busts.
- Too much detailing in the wrong places. Well placed applique or lace design will accentuate your body nicely.
Helpful Tips For The Best Wedding Dress Neckline
- The right bra can make all the difference. A lingerie store can fit you for a strapless bra to further assist keeping everything in place. A good bra, adhesive bras, or fashion tape are all options (fashion tape should be in your wedding emergency kit).
- Accessories like detachable sleeves and toppers can be dramatic pieces that are a great way to give two looks in one, while maintaining the perfect shape of the dress on your body.
