The Sheath style is a popular design for chic modern brides or those looking for a minimalist gown.
What Is A Sheath Silhouette?
A sheath is characterized by a fitted bodice with a skirt that falls straight and may or may not flare slightly at the bottom. They are made in all fabrics, including crepe, satin, and lace, and provide a classic elegance to a bridal look.
These are softer than the tighter mermaid and trumpet silhouettes, allowing more effortless movement. Sheath style dresses are cut with a fitted bodice and follow the shape of the body’s natural curves, skimming the waist and hips with a tailored fit. Sheath-style wedding dresses will emphasize an hourglass figure and elongate a petite frame.

What Attributes Can A Sheath Style Gown Have?
Many! For brides who do not want the volume of an A-line wedding dress or the extreme flair of mermaid styles, sheath style wedding dresses are the perfect choice for a simple and manageable skirt. The bodice and neckline details are anything you could ask for.
Sheath wedding dresses can be clean lines and classic elegance, minimalist design or intricate beading and lacy glamorous! It’s all about the fabric choices. A matte crepe is ideal for the bride wanting clean, while a beaded lace brings the red-carpet glamour.

As for designs, there are strapless, tank and spaghetti straps, sleeve styles like cap, long sleeves, or detachables. Neck lines of square, scoop, V-neck, halter, or plunging neckline. The back of the gown details can be full coverage all the way down to extra low. Sheath wedding gowns with details on the bodice and/or long sleeves will draw the eye upward and therefore can be a lovely option for a pear shape body type.

Since sheath wedding dresses tend to have a softer silhouette, make sure to search for styles with boning, a corset or structured cups if you need more support. Great shape in plus sized wedding dresses with a cat eye neckline, ruching and side cut out details. Also, consider what undergarments you will wear as this style skims the body, pay special attention to what you wear underneath.
Is A Column Silhouette The Same As Sheath?
No. A column dress gets its name because it has a column-like shape. It falls straight down from the bust or shoulders with minimal to no shaping:
- Has a straight, relaxed line from top to bottom
- Little to no internal structure
- Easier to walk in
- Best for brides who want a soft look without hugging the hips

Column wedding dresses have very chic silhouette, perfect for a modern, minimalist intimate wedding. It is understated and elegant with an urban, effortless look. Where sheath gowns emphasize curves, column gowns will be a long, straight line. While they can lengthen the silhouette, they fall straight down with no internal structure. This can make the hips look wider if the fabric hugs the body without definition at the waist.
Column dresses are excellent choices for body shapes including athletic and petite brides.
The column and sheath silhouettes are great options for destination weddings, both for ease of transportation and for lightweight fabrics worn in warm or tropical climates.
