The Best Alternatives to a Traditional Wedding Veil

Listen to this blog as a podcast:

Today’s modern bride has many alternative options to a traditional veil for her wedding day look!

While many brides still opt for the popular choice of the traditional veil look, there are countless options for bridal hair accessories for the type of bride who imagines something different on her special day.

We’ve done many blogs on veils, the styles, edges, lengths, etc., but what if it’s just not your thing? Does that blusher piece over the face makes you cringe thinking of walking down the aisle like that? Maybe you have tried them on with your wedding dress and while you have appreciated the look on other brides, but it’s just not you. Not to worry.

You are not alone if you are on the fence, or just flat-out don’t want to wear a bridal veil to “complete” your wedding style. The only way to go wrong on your big day look is to wear to something that isn’t right for your personal style.

Will I feel like a bride without a veil?

Of course you will!  Here are some tried and true wedding veil alternatives.

Let’s consider bridal headbands or a hair accessory. These lovely additions stay pinned in your hair all evening. There are many varied styles of wedding hair accessories.

Wedding Veil Alternatives: Bridal Headbands

Complete with sparkles, pearls, flowers, thick or thin, flat or raised, there are hundreds of options that work with short or long hair, and most any bridal hairstyle. Some can be pinned into your hair on the top of your head or you can find that perfect headpiece that ties in the back under your hair, leaving pretty ribbons or bridal hair vines flowing down the back. Add colored ribbons or gemstones to bobby pins or hair combs for a personal touch.

Princess, Boho, Glam, and Modern Brides

For the Princess, a dazzling tiara would be the perfect eye-catching headpiece!

What about boho brides with an outdoor ceremony? A wedding flower crown (or even flowers woven into the hair) is a gorgeous, earthy option that lends softness and romance. Add greenery, color, berries, sparkle, whatever you love! You can add ribbons to floral crowns as well to take it up a notch.

Glam wedding? Try a birdcage veil or a bridal fascinator, add some color if you want. A vintage tiara or certain crystal headpieces are other perfect ways to throw your look back to a time of gilded sophistication and pomp!

Modern brides with a minimalist wedding theme can look for a beautiful set of hair pins. For brides with short hair, this is the perfect look and an easy way to elevate your style in different ways.

Hair Styling & Bridal Accessories

Considering an up-do on your day? Half up/half down? Loose braid? Wear a bridal comb to top any of these off! This adds a touch of sparkle or floral and is a great option if you do not want a traditional wedding veil, and especially for those with a bridal look that includes dramatic dress trains.

Maybe you’re not into anything at all in your hair.  Maybe you would like a bow, jacket, detachable sleeves, an over skirt, a cape, an accessory other than a veil. There are so many different bridal accessories. Do not wear anything that feels like a costume or phony.  You need to feel beautiful and confident so you shine as your authentic self.

It is a good idea to try on all these different pieces with your dress and see what feels and looks right. Whether you choose a wedding tiara, bridal combs, a floral headpiece, or sparkly hair clips, your wedding outfit and overall look is the most important thing in ensuring that you feel the best on your big day.

Do not choose a veil (or any piece!) because you feel you have to, because everyone else does it, or because wedding tradition says so. There are many wedding veil alternatives!
