Dress Code Guide: From Casual To White Tie

Few things cause wedding guests more uncertainty than a dress code on a wedding invitation.

A dress code is meant to make getting dressed easier, but with everything from casual celebrations to formal black-tie weddings and ultra formal white-tie affairs, knowing exactly what is expected can sometimes feel confusing.

The good news? Once you understand the basics, dressing appropriately – and looking fantastic – becomes much easier. Here’s your guide to dress codes, from casual to the most formal of all.

Casual Wedding Attire

The goal: Look put-together without looking overdressed. A casual wedding dress code gives guests the most flexibility, but casual doesn’t mean careless. Think polished, comfortable and appropriate for a celebration.

Women can wear a casual dress, a dressy skirt and blouse, a jumpsuit, or a polished pantsuit. Floral prints, soft colors and seasonal fabrics work beautifully for daytime weddings. Dress sandals, flats or low heels are appropriate.

Men can opt for dress pants or chinos paired with a button-down shirt or polo-style knit shirt. A sport coat is a great way to elevate the look, especially for an evening wedding. A tie is generally optional.

Dressy Casual or Cocktail Attire

The goal: Festive, sophisticated and wedding-ready. Cocktail attire is one of the most common wedding dress codes—and one of the most fun. It calls for something more polished than everyday clothing but doesn’t require a full-length gown or tuxedo.

A cocktail dress, midi dress, dressy jumpsuit or elegant two-piece outfit works beautifully for the ladies. This is a great opportunity to incorporate color, texture, prints or statement accessories. Heels, dressy flats and sophisticated sandals are all appropriate.

A suit is the classic choice. Navy, charcoal, medium gray and seasonal colors are excellent options. Pair the suit with a dress shirt, tie and coordinating dress shoes.

Semi-Formal Attire

The goal: Refined without going all the way to formal. Semi-formal wedding dress code sits between cocktail and formal. The time of day and venue matter here. A daytime semi-formal wedding may call for lighter colors and fabrics, while an evening celebration typically leans darker and more sophisticated.

Women look for a knee-length, midi or tea-length dress, dressy jumpsuit or elegant separates are all good choices. Dress up your look with jewelry, a clutch and polished shoes.

For the men – a suit and dress shirt are appropriate, with or without a tie depending on the wedding and venue. Darker suits are ideal for evening celebrations, while lighter gray, blue or tan can work beautifully for daytime weddings.

Formal Wedding Dress Code

When a wedding invitation says Formal, it’s time to step things up. This is where a well-tailored suit or elegant evening dress becomes particularly important.

Ladies, a floor-length gown isn’t always required, but it is certainly appropriate. A sophisticated midi or cocktail dress can also work, particularly for a daytime wedding. Elegant fabrics such as chiffon, silk, satin and crepe can instantly elevate your look.

A tuxedo is appropriate, however so is a dark, well-fitted 3-piece suit with crisp white dress shirt, tie and dress shoes for the men. Black, navy and charcoal are timeless choices.

And gentlemen, this is a perfect example of why fit matters as much as the label. An impeccably fitted suit will always look more polished than an expensive suit that doesn’t fit properly.

Black-Tie Event

Now we’re getting glamorous.

A black-tie wedding is an evening affair that calls for traditional formal wear. This is the time to embrace the opportunity to dress up.

Women: A sophisticated floor-length evening gown is expected. Think classic fabrics, refined jewelry and evening-appropriate accessories.

Men: Black tie means a tuxedo, traditionally worn with a black bow tie, white pocket square, white formal shirt, a black cummerbund or formal vest, and black patent leather dress shoes.

A tuxedo is not simply a black suit. The satin details on the lapels and trousers, along with the formal shirt and bow tie, are what give traditional black tie its distinctive appearance.

White Tie Dress Code

If you’ve received an invitation specifying white tie, congratulations—you’ve been invited to one of the most formal types of events imaginable. White tie is considerably more formal than black tie and is rarely requested for modern weddings. But when it is, the dress code should be taken literally.

White Tie Dress Code

Ladies wear a full-length evening gown is expected. Elegant jewelry, formal shoes and a sophisticated evening bag complete the look. Depending on the occasion and venue, long gloves may also be appropriate.

For the men, white tie requires a black tailcoat, matching formal trousers, a white piqué or Marcella waistcoat, a stiff white wing-collar shirt and a white bow tie. Formal black shoes are worn, and accessories such as white gloves may be appropriate.

This is definitely not the occasion for a standard business suit or even a traditional black tuxedo.

What About “Black Tie Optional”?

This dress code gives guests a little more flexibility, although is confusing to guests. If you opt not to dress black tie, then what do you wear?

Ladies: A formal floor-length gown is encouraged, however an elegant cocktail dress or sophisticated evening dress works beautifully.

Gentlemen: A tuxedo is encouraged, but a dark formal suit with a white dress shirt and conservative tie is also acceptable.

When in doubt, err on the side of dressing up. It’s much easier to remove a jacket or simplify accessories than to arrive noticeably underdressed.

A Few Wedding Guest Rules to Remember

No matter what the invitation says, there are a few universal guidelines worth keeping in mind.

Consider the venue. A beach wedding, historic estate, ballroom and rustic barn may all call for very different interpretations of the same dress code.

Think about the time of day. Daytime weddings tend to welcome lighter colors and fabrics, while evening celebrations generally call for deeper colors and more formal styling.

Don’t forget the season. Linen and lightweight fabrics are wonderful for summer, while velvet, wool and richer textures can be beautiful for fall and winter weddings.

Never assume that “formal” means tuxedo. Unless the invitation specifically says black tie or black tie optional, a well-tailored formal suit may be exactly right.

And remember the golden rule: Don’t outshine the couple. Guests should look polished and celebratory without dressing in a way that competes with the bride or groom.

When in Doubt, Ask!

Wedding dress codes are ultimately about helping guests feel comfortable and ensuring everyone looks appropriate for the celebration. If you’re genuinely unsure, ask the couple, the wedding planner or someone in the wedding party.

And for the gentlemen especially, a professional tuxedo or formalwear specialist can take the guesswork out of the process. From choosing between a suit and tuxedo to selecting the right shirt, tie, shoes and accessories, the right guidance can make getting dressed one of the easiest parts of attending a wedding.

Because the best wedding guest outfit isn’t simply the one that follows the dress code—it’s the one that makes you feel confident, comfortable and ready to celebrate.

Dress Code FAQs

What does “formal attire” mean on an invitation?

An invitation specifying the dress code is formal, that means guests should wear their best. For men, this means formal suit and women should wear a floor length gown or an evening cocktail dress or pant suit.

Does a man need to wear a tuxedo for a black tie dress code?

Yes. Black tie is very formal and requires a tuxedo with a bowtie and formal dress shoes.

Does a man wear a suit to a semi-formal wedding?

Yes. Depending on the season and/or time of day, choose midnight blue, charcoal, or black for an autumn/winter or evening event; select lighter greys or blues for a spring/summer or day time celebration.

Should a woman wear a floor length gown to a semi-formal event?

No. Semi formal is a step down from formal, but still requires a polished appearance. Women can choose a cocktail dress or dressy jumpsuit. The look should be elegant and refined.

What is the difference between “black tie” and “formal attire” dress codes?

A Black tie wedding always calls for men in tuxedos and women in floor length dresses. Accessories are a must like statement jewelry and opera gloves for women; sharp cufflinks, a handsome watch, and white pocket squares for the men. Formal for a wedding is a tuxedo for the men and floor length gown for the women. Formal for a Gala or a dinner party means a tuxedo or 3-piece suit for men, and a long gown for women.

What is the difference between a formal and a semi-formal dress?

Formal dresses are to the floor and generally made of fabrics like satin, jacquard, crepe or chiffon. These often have embellishments such as lace, back buttons, or bead work. Semi-formal dresses are generally knee length and can also include dressy jumpsuits in an elegant fabric.

What is worn to white-tie events?

White tie is a step up from black-tie attire and requires a tuxedo with tails like our Ritz by Ralph Lauren.
