Tuxedo Accessories: What To Wear With Your Tuxedo

When it comes to formal events, a fitted tuxedo truly exudes sophistication and class. However, it’s not just the tuxedo itself that makes the outfit complete; the finishing touches of the accessories can truly bring it all together. From the bow tie to the pocket square, every detail counts when it comes to accessorizing a tuxedo.

The Bow Tie

One of the most iconic accessories to pair with a tuxedo is the bow tie.  While some prefer to wear a long tie with their tuxedos, a classic black satin bow tie is the traditional choice, but there are also options in different colors and patterns to add a touch of personality to the outfit.

For a more modern look, a skinny or diamond-pointed bow tie can also be worn:

Because tying a bow tie yourself can be a bit complicated, most bow ties that you rent are pre-tied and clip on.  Of course, for those who like to tie their own bow tie, many formal wear stores can sell you a tieable bow tie.

The Pocket Square

Another essential accessory for a tuxedo is the pocket square. The pocket square essentially looks like a satin handkerchief and is placed in the front pocket of the tuxedo jacket.

This small detail can make a big impact on the overall look of the outfit. A white pocket square is the most traditional choice, but it can also be a great opportunity to add a pop of color and or texture to the outfit.

A pocket square should be folded neatly and placed in the breast pocket of the jacket, and should never be tucked all the way in.  There are many ways to fold a pocket square but that subject is fit for a blog all of its own!

The Cummerbund and Vest

The cummerbund and vest are also popular accessories for tuxedos. A cummerbund is a wide waistband worn around the waist and is typically made of the same fabric as the tuxedo or can be made of satin.

A vest, on the other hand, is worn under the jacket and can be a great way to add a touch of color or pattern to the outfit and match the tie.  We personally like wearing vests whose fabric matches the color, texture and the same fabric of the tuxedo jacket.

Both of these accessories are typically worn with a bow tie and can be a great way to add a touch of personality to the outfit.

To be clear, cummerbunds are far less common than vests.  I would say 99% of all tuxedo rentals that Darianna Bridal & Tuxedo handles, the customer chooses a vest over a cummerbund.

Tuxedo Shoes

When it comes to shoes, a classic black patent leather shoe is the traditional choice for a tuxedo. However, there are also options in different shades of brown or even in a velvet material for a more unique look. It’s important to make sure that the shoes are polished and in good condition, as scuffed or worn shoes can detract from the overall look of the outfit.

While patent leather shoes are more traditional for a tuxedo, we sometimes find customers preferring a matte finish shoe.  The reason is that they just don’t like the shiny shoe look.  We believe you should choose shoes and accessories that are preferred by you.

Brown shoes have become popular with our gray, tan, brown, navy and various shades of blue tuxedos.  Therefore, for the past 8 or so years, you will see many people wearing brown shoes with their tuxedos.

Cufflinks and studs are the finishing touches to a tuxedo. These small details can add a touch of elegance and class to the outfit.

Cufflinks and studs can be made of various materials, such as mother of pearl, gold, or even diamonds. It’s important to make sure that the cufflinks and studs match the overall style of the outfit.  At Darianna Bridal & Tuxedo, we include the studs and cufflinks as part of the tuxedo and rental.  We offer black with silver, black with gold, and white with gold cufflinks and studs.  And of course, we will suggest the best ones for the style of tuxedo you are wearing.

Studs look like small buttons that replace the buttons of a shirt to provide a more polished look.  Instead of seeing the buttons on the front of a shirt, you will see the studs for the perfect finish.  Another name for studs that you will often hear is button covers.

Final Thoughts

A tuxedo jacket and pants are beautiful all on their own.  However when you add varying accessories such as an interesting bow tie, a classy vest, a dapper pocket square, studs, cufflinks and stylish shoes, it is easy to see how everything comes together in a stunning and classy way.
