The Trends and Colors of Prom 2013-2023

One of the best parts of prom season is watching the trends and colors. It changes year to year!

Let’s go back over the last decade for prom. In 2013-2014 the trend was glitz and glam, the more beaded the better. The hot colors then were black, red, silver and gold, but definitely embellished with glass-like chunky stones. One of our best selling dresses then was this gold beaded dress with a feathered skirt from Jasz:

The following years into 2015-16 saw a move toward two pieces sets in mermaid shapes, halter shaped tops, and ocean colors:

In 2017, the shift was on to pretty floral.

Although the two-piece sets were still a thing, the one piece dress was coming back to the norm and we saw a move toward the A-line and ballgown shapes, too, like these from designers LaFemme and Clarisse:

By 2018-2019 prom season…

the color and style shift really changed. Really changed. Enter the plain, minimalist dress. While we still have the occasional prom goer asking for something a little unique, the overwhelming majority wanted plain: minimal to no shine, sheath style, in jewel tone colors like sapphire blue, ruby red, and emerald green.

Now we all know what happened to prom in 2020-2021, such an awful time. However, we got through it that brings us right up to present.

As prom goers begin their search, they are finding the trends and colors are excitingly vast! Sheath, mermaid, and A-line styles are all there for the choosing, but in the complete rainbow of colors from whites and pastels to the jewel colors and black.

It seems that the designers are still attempting to open the selection up as wide as possible after the Covid shut down. Last year and this year so far, the trends and colors have been simple styles lighter colors like sky blue, lavender, and blush, with beaded lace and bead detailing like these from Faviana:

There are however some signs of history repeating itself, as a few very pretty sequined dresses are showing back up:

And now for the latest and greatest – how about a jumpsuit for prom! Not into dresses? Now there are some gorgeous and fun options for you, too:
