Bridal Accessories We Love: Sleeves, Veils, Headpieces

Listen to this blog as a podcast:

Sometimes even the perfect dress needs a little…something. But how do you know what you’re missing? Enter the bridal accessories!

It may seem overwhelming at first, but we’re here to help. You will learn exactly which bridal accessories you need for the perfect look on your perfect day.

When trying to decide if these accessories are for you, there are many factors to consider. The three below are some of the biggest that can play into your decision

WEATHER – Will your venue be indoor or outdoor? Will it be cold or hot? Will there be wind? Are you walking on a smooth path or bumpier terrain?

STYLE – Will these accessories cover important details? Will it match the style and theme of your dress and event?

COMFORT – Will you be comfortable spending hours wearing these accessories? Is your skin sensitive and will it be irritated by the accessory? Do you personally feel comfortable wearing this accessory?

Once you inspect these factors further, decision making becomes a lot easier to choose your perfect bridal accessories.

BRIDAL ACCESSORIES: SLEEVES

When it comes to sleeves, you first have to decide if that’s a feature you want with your chosen bridal gown. Sleeves can be the finishing touch your dress needs, but while sleeves can help your look, it can also hurt it.

There are plenty of factors that can play into the decision of if sleeves should be part of your wedding day look. Logistical factors such as weather and venue are great factors to consider, as the necessity and comfort of sleeves vary depending on the season of your big day.

The next big factor to consider is the style of the dress. Does the addition of sleeves add to the dress and make it shine, or does it hide details and make the look feel too cluttered? Before you ask yourself these questions, the biggest factor you must consider first is your comfort.

Will you be comfortable spending time in a dress with sleeves? You’ll be doing everything from dancing to saying your vows in this dress, so you’ll want to be as comfortable as possible. Will sleeves help this cause or hurt it?

If you aren’t sure, that’s ok! Check out THIS GUIDE for more tips on whether you should be saying yes to the sleeves.

Yes, I want sleeves!

That’s great! But how do you know which sleeves to go with? Do you want permanent sleeves or detachable ones? Which of the eight kinds of bridal sleeves should you look into, and which should you avoid? Each sleeve has different features, and deciding which features you want can help you decide which sleeve is for you! Check out this sleeve flowchart:

This flowchart can give you a good idea of the factors you might be looking for, and your result may very well be what you’re looking for! However, something important to consider in addition to those factors is the style of the dress. You want to make sure your chosen sleeves not only match, but flow naturally with the rest of the dress.

To do this, you can try tricks such as matching similar fabrics, details such as applique, and overall shape of both pieces. For more help and information to help your decision, check out our guide to the EIGHT BRIDAL SLEEVES!

Overall, you want to make sure that you feel comfortable and beautiful on your wedding day, and sleeves may just be the missing puzzle piece to your perfect bridal ensemble!

VEILS

One of the most well known and classic accessories in the bridal world is the veil. So much more than just a hairpiece, the veil can be used to add detail to a dress, frame your face, and is often a wedding tradition. But how do you know if a veil is right for you, and which of the seven veil lengths should be the one you wear down the aisle?

The first decision is to decide it you want a veil.

Going back to the three big factors once again can help with this and as you can see from just the three photos above, the look is entirely different. A veil is not a necessary accessory, and many brides choose to not wear one. It all depends on your personal preference, as well as those common factors we’ve discussed before:

  • Will an outdoor venue with lots of wind make wearing a veil uncomfortable and cause issues with the photography?
  • Will the presence of a veil on top of a heavily decorated dress make a distracting image and take away from the details on the fabric?

Questions like these are important ones to ask when making your decision.

Yes, I want a veil!

Wonderful, you are going for the traditional bridal look! But you aren’t done quite yet… just like with sleeves, there are many types of wedding veils and certain veils look better with certain wedding dresses. The first topic to consider is the length of your veil.

There are seven main lengths to consider, ranging from minimalist veils like the Shoulder Length all the way to the grand and majestic Regal Cathedral wedding veil. For more information on different lengths of veils, check out THIS PAGE.

The second topic to consider is the detail on your veil. Are you looking for a simple and classic, plain veil? Or would extra detail like a veil covered in pearls accent your dress perfectly? Perhaps a cathedral veil with flower applique around the bottom would match the details on your dress or beautifully frame a plain wedding dress train.

There are all kinds of different decorations that can make your veil pop and match with your dress. Common details you might see are glitter, pearls, jewels, flower-shaped appliques, and more! Often times a veil is chosen that matches the details on the dress, while other times the simplicity of a plain veil is all that you need.

No, I do not want a veil!

You do not need a veil for the perfect look. Many brides tend to avoid the veil all together, and there are many other options if you still want a little something in your hair.

The good news is that today’s modern bride has so many ways to show off her bridal style. Consider other options like jeweled belts, sparkly hair pins or other hair accessories like bows or flowers, delicate gloves, bridal jewelry, capes and wraps, and of course statement shoes. Any of these can be the perfect finishing touches to show your personal style.

Just like wedding dresses, accessories can look completely different on display. Something you would look right past might be the completer piece to your look. The best way to choose your bridal accessories this is when you choose your dress.
