When Should a Ring Bearer Get Measured for a Tuxedo?

We are often asked when the ring bearer should get measured for a wedding tuxedo or suit.  When you think about it, the young members of the bridal party are most likely still growing.  Getting them measured and fitted for their tuxedo too early will most likely cause their parents to make another trip to the formal wear store to have the young wedding attendee re-measured.

Measurement

Our general rule of thumb is to have the ring bearer measured about 3 to 4 weeks before the wedding.  While there could be a growth spurt during those 3 to 4 weeks, there is less of a likelihood that there will be the need for a complete change in attire because the child is a completely different size.

We believe getting measured 3 to 4 weeks before the wedding can also apply to any young person that may still be growing.  If you have a 16 year old in a wedding who is still growing, we suggest to wait to get him measured closer to the wedding date to reduce the need to further alter the garments or even exchange them for larger sizes.

A few years ago, we had a young man who was attending junior prom in March.  He was in a wedding at the end of May and he needed another tuxedo. The parents called and asked us if we could use the same measurements from prom. We advised them that his sizing could be different in the three months between his prom and the upcoming wedding. They asked if we could still use the same prom measurements and we agreed.

Fast forward to the May wedding and the young man grew two inches in that time! His pants were two inches too short, but it was no problem lengthening the pants to make him wedding ready. Everyone was surprised as no one expected it, especially in such a short time.

Try-On Tips

Finally, to help ensure you have the perfect fitting tuxedo or suit rental, we advise that you try on and pick up your tuxedo or suit rental as soon as it’s ready. This will give the formal wear store enough time to make changes to your tuxedo or suit.

If you know you’ve changed in size, or the ring bearer has grown since getting measured, stop by the formal wear store for a quick remeasure before the wedding. While much of this advice is applicable to adults, it is especially important for the ring bearer or junior groomsman who is still growing.
