Do you dream of having your wedding in a gorgeous outdoor setting? We found one of the most perfect places yet: The Tetons in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
In mid-September we headed out there for a quick getaway. We love to travel, and having never been to Wyoming it was truly an experience in everything from scenery (breathtaking!) to food (elk nachos!) to altitude (10,450’!). It was pure beauty. The temperatures were in the 70s, the majestic Aspens were full golden yellow, and there were acres and acres of unspoiled nature.
To get a perspective on planning a wedding there, we met up with Kathi Michel, the premier Event Planner in the area. She and her husband Steve so graciously met with us as Kathi was coming back from a wedding in Yellowstone. Her energy is endless. We were with her an hour and are 100% sure of that! Q: How did you get into event planning?
A: In 1989 I joined the team that opened the Mirage in Las Vegas. I planned events there, at the Las Vegas Hilton, Golden Nugget, and Flamingo. I then went on to Club Corp of America and Indian Wells Country Club in Palm Springs, California where I orchestrated weddings, fundraisers and special events to become the leading award-winning event director in the country. In 2001 I arrived in Jackson Hole and joined Snake River Lodge and Spa at Teton Village. I loved creating ” Magic Moment” events at private ranches, mountain locations and private homes.
Q: When did Special Events Jackson Hole open?
A: I created Special Events Jackson Hole in 2005. I serve the wedding and special events market that has specifically chosen the Jackson, Wyoming / Teton Mountains area as a premier destination. Hundreds of Special Events Jackson Hole clients have had their vision of that special wedding or event come true, which gives me the greatest satisfaction and gratification.
Q: How do your clients find you?
A: Word of mouth and referrals – many of the hotels in Jackson Hole refer their guests to me – and my website as well.
Q: What is the range in number of guest/attendees that you have done in Jackson Hole?
A: I have planned weddings with four people to 300 and everything in between.
Q: How long do you suggest they stay?
A: I suggest 5-7 days in Jackson Hole. I can plan a lot for them to do and if they are here they should experience as much of this beautiful area as possible.
Q: What kind of activities do you plan for the guests?
A: Anything! Golf outings, horseback riding, tours of Yellowstone, white water rafting trips, flotilla rafts, hiking, skiing, fishing, dinners, you name it. I can keep them busy for as long as they stay.
Q: Where do you suggest weddings are held?
A: Depending on the size, there are breathtaking locations like Schwabacher’s Landing, Grand Teton National Park, the Couloir Restaurant at the top of the gondola in Teton Village overlooking the Snake River (at 9,095’), Diamond Cross Ranch, and Snake River Ranch. A Snake River Ranch wedding was recently featured in the Knot.
Q: What is the most frequently asked question?
A: For sure, “What if it rains?” I tell them, “We’re in the mountains. Storms blow in and blow out. It will blow over! If you need an umbrella, I have them!” We can set up tents, heating, lights, and a little rain won’t spoil anything.
Q: What else can you help with regarding the planning?
A: Everything. The license, flowers, entertainment, photography, catering, chairs, decorations, lodging, tour packages… I suggest what works best, and can incorporate most any idea into the event. Whatever is needed or requested, I give it my all to make it work.
Q: What do you do in your own free time?
A: I spend a lot of time with my husband of 27 years, Steve. I also have my horse, I’ve been a horseback rider since I was 11, and our dogs, I have a great life!
