A wedding gown is not just an ordinary dress. Because bridal gowns are heavily structured, intricately layered, and perfectly tailored to your unique measurements, getting into them requires a bit more finesse than zipping up your favorite everyday sundress.

Wedding dresses often feature built-in corsets, structural boning, delicate invisible zippers, and multiple layers of luxury fabrics like crepe, tulle, or Mikado. Others have the zipper sewn in a delicate mesh. Because of this complex architecture, zipping them up requires a specific technique to protect the delicate fabric, preserve the hardware, and ensure a flawless fit.

We have helped countless brides into their gowns, and the secret lies in a simple, systematic approach. Here is the comprehensive, step-by-step guide to zipping your dress flawlessly, ensuring you look and feel absolutely perfect as you walk down the aisle.

Pre-Zipping Preparation: Setting the Stage

Before you even touch the zipper, proper preparation is key. Make sure you have used the restroom, applied your deodorant (and let it dry!), and finished your hair and makeup. Have your Maid of Honor, mother, or designated “zipper helper” wash and thoroughly dry their hands so no makeup or natural oils transfer onto your pristine gown.

Whenever possible, step into your gown rather than pulling it over your head. This protects your bridal hair and makeup from getting snagged or smudged. Once the dress is pulled up over your hips and your arms are through the straps or sleeves, you are ready to begin the zipping process.

1. To Zip Your Wedding Dress, Find the Waist

First, ensure the dress is positioned properly at your natural waistline.

This is arguably the most critical step, yet it is the one most frequently skipped in the rush of the wedding morning. Your natural waist is the narrowest part of your torso, typically located just above your belly button and below your rib cage.

Regardless of the type of waist (Natural, basque, dropped) or dress silhouette, it needs to be in the proper position on your body.

Wedding gowns are highly engineered garments designed to anchor at this specific point. The boning in the bodice is meant to sit precisely along the curves of your torso. If the dress is sitting too low on your hips, the proportions will be entirely off, and the zipper simply will not close.

Before anyone attempts to zip the gown, physically lift the dress by the side seams and settle it exactly where it was designed to sit on your waist. Anchoring the gown properly makes the rest of the process exponentially easier.

2. Start the Zip

Gently pull the zipper up until you begin to feel resistance.

With the dress sitting perfectly at your natural waist, have your helper locate the bottom of the zipper track. They should hold the base of the zipper firmly with one hand to provide tension, and use their other hand to smoothly guide the zipper pull upward.

You should expect the zipper to glide easily over the lower back, but eventually, your helper will feel a distinct point of resistance. This typically happens right around the mid-back or just below the rib cage, where your body naturally widens. When they hit this point, it is incredibly important that they do not force it.

3. Secure the Top

Stop zipping! Before you force the zipper any further, fasten the hook and eye closure at the top of the zipper.

If there is one piece of advice you take away from this guide, let it be this. Bridal zippers (especially delicate invisible zippers) are not designed to pull two sides of a tight, structured garment together horizontally; they are only designed to move vertically.

When you feel resistance, stop. Have your helper reach to the very top of the zipper track (usually located at the top edge of the back bodice) and securely fasten the metal hook and eye closure. This crucial step bridges the gap between the two sides of the dress. By closing the hook and eye before the zipper reaches the top, the metal hook absorbs 100% of the horizontal pulling tension. This completely takes the stress off the zipper track and prevents the teeth from splitting or the pull from breaking off in your helper’s hands.

4. Finish Zipping

With the tension relieved, zip your wedding dress to the top.

Because the hook and eye closure is now doing all the heavy lifting of holding the gown together across your back, the zipper should glide up the remaining track with ease. Your helper should pull it smoothly and steadily until it meets the hook and eye at the top.

If there are any decorative buttons trailing down the back of your gown (a classic and beloved bridal detail), these should only be buttoned after the zipper is completely closed and secured. Never try to button a dress before zipping it!

5. Smooth it Out: The Sweep Method

Finally, run your hands gently down the back of the gown to smooth out the fabric, eliminating any wrinkles or back bulges.

Once the dress is fully zipped, have your helper run their hands flat down the zipper placket. Invisible zippers can sometimes buckle slightly or fold inward, so smoothing the fabric ensures it lays completely flush against your back for a seamless look.

This is also the time for a quick comfort check. Because bridal gowns fit so snugly, it is very common for skin to get pushed together creating a bulge or creased look. If this happens, use the sweep method:

• Have your helper place her two index fingers at the top edge of the dress (where skin in bulging)
• Sweep towards the outside of the body
• This will smooth out the skin and the dress. Voila!

Bridal Pro-Tip: Use Two Helpers

It is completely normal to need an extra set of hands to gently pull the sides of the dress together to zip your wedding dress!

Many brides experience a moment of panic on their wedding morning when their dress feels incredibly tight as it goes on. Do not worry—your wedding dress is meant to fit snugly to support you, hold up the weight of the skirt, and give you a beautifully sculpted silhouette.

If the dress still feels a little tough to close, have a second bridesmaid or your mother stand next to the person zipping. The second helper should use both hands to physically pull the two sides of the back of the dress together. This gives the person operating the zipper a completely tension-free track to work with.

Remember, the fabrics used in wedding gowns, along with the warmth of your own body heat, will naturally stretch, soften, and mold to your body as you wear it throughout your celebration. A gown that feels delightfully snug when you first zip it at 11:00 AM will feel like a comfortable second skin by the time you are dancing at your reception.

Q. The skin on my back is bunched up when my dress is zippered. How do I fix this?

A. An easy fix is to have someone insert their index fingers at the top of the zipper and gently pull them to the outside. This will flatten the skin so it is not pushed together.

As such, you know there will be time commitments as well as financial ones. Between the engagement party, bachelor and bachelorette parties and the travel expenses associated, bridal shower, and the wedding gift, the total cost can be surprising.  

But do you know how the wedding attire costs compare between bridesmaids and groomsmen?

Wedding party members will be expected to dress according to the couple’s directives. This will include bridesmaid dresses in the color palette chosen and groomsmen in the selected tuxedo or suit rental. Our store does not sell bridesmaid dresses anymore, however, we have a robust suit and tuxedo department. We find it very interesting to hear discussions of the wedding attire costs.

Often the groomsmen will be surprised at the cost for a full tuxedo or suit rental. When it is broken down, they quickly realize they are paying less for their wedding attire than the bridesmaids.

Groomsman Suit or Tux Package: What Is Included

When you rent one of our suits or tuxedos, the price ranges from $195-$300 depending on the designer and style chosen. The following are included in the price:

• Jacket
• Pants
• Shirt
• Vest
• Tie (long or bow)
• Pocket square
• Cufflinks & Jewelry studs
• Shoes
• Damage waiver/coverage
• Shipping
• Alterations, if needed*

*The garment is delivered in each specific groomsman’s size. If adjustments need to be made, there is no additional cost.

• Come in to be measured professionally
• Return to pick up before the wedding (unless it is shipped)
• Return after the wedding

Bridesmaid Dress: What Is Included

Many bridesmaids purchase dress online. The average bridesmaid dress from some popular online websites (Azazie, Revelry, Birdie Gray) ranges from $129-$250*. The following are included in the price:

• Dress
• Some include shipping, others ship free over certain amounts spent

*Old styles/discontinued dresses may be available for a more affordable option in specific sizes and colors, if it works with the bride’s wedding style.

Additional Requirements: 

• Shoes, jewelry, and undergarments if needed
• Travel time and hour for to first dress fitting
• Travel time and try on for dress pick up 

Wedding Attire Costs: Let’s Compare 

Estimate for Groomsman: $300 – Let’s assume the groomsmen each pay the highest $300 for their suit or tuxedo rental package.

Estimate for Bridesmaid: $330 – The bridesmaids need:

• Dress: $150
• Shoes: $30
• Alterations $150

For comparison purposes we used a bridesmaid dress at a mid-range cost of $150 with free shipping and a $30 pair of shoes. Now let’s add her alterations.

While we do not sell bridesmaid dresses, we do alter them. Maids need the dress hemmed, additional work in the bodice or straps to fit properly, and a press or steam (since they arrive in the mail, they are often quite wrinkled). The average cost of a bridesmaid dress alterations in our store is $150.

We have noticed that groomsmen often think they are paying more for their part in the wedding, when they actually are paying less than the bridesmaids.

Groomsmen’s suits include everything they need to be fully dressed at the wedding.

Bridesmaids dresses are the dress alone. There is more that goes along with it separately in order for her to be fully dressed on the wedding day.

Wedding Attire Costs Plus…

We know that modern weddings can be costly. Extravagant events like a bachelor party in Las Vegas, a bachelorette party in Nashville are also part of the wedding planning process. Even destination weddings add a lot of money in travel costs like airfare and a hotel room.

Before accepting to be part of a wedding party, consider whether it will be too much of a financial burden. Have an open discussion regarding specific costs to make an informed decision.

If you are a bridesmaid, you will also need to ask if you will need to budget (and how much money) for professional hair and makeup services on the wedding day, and don’t forget aside from the bachelorette party, there will be a bridal shower gift required, or possibly contributing to a group gift.

There is much responsibility that goes along with accepting a role as bridal party members. If the costs associated with this responsibility are simply too much, be upfront early on. It is better for everyone to have a positive experience from the start rather than having misunderstandings and hurt feelings along the way.

The important thing is your presence on the big day, whether you are in the wedding party or celebrating with them as a guest.

Our days at National Bridal Market Chicago were spent visiting the industry’s top designers that we carry in our store. We also hunt for new designers and collections to bring in for our customers. 

National Bridal Market – Day 1

We arrived on Sunday and went straight from the airport to W Merchandise Mart Plaza where the bridal show was already bustling!

We stopped by Kitty Chen to explore her gorgeous new gowns and chat with Kitty Chen herself. It’s always special when we get to talk to the actual designer about the gowns, fabrics, and design choices they made. If you know Kitty Chen wedding dresses, then you know she offers incredibly beautiful and dramatic lace trains and matching royal length veils. Her new collection continues to stun.

After checking out Kitty Chen, we bee-lined to Morilee to see their new collection. Morilee has made some really fabulous, best-selling gowns like Petal and Dominique, so we were really excited to see their Spring 2027 line. 

We then went to Mon Cheri Bridal and watched Sophia Tolli’s runway show. Sophia herself was introducing her dresses to us! We took time to look at the new Mother of the Bride & Groom dresses from Montage and Cameron Blake, two designers that our customers love. 

National Bridal Market – Day 2

Our second day at Market was just as busy as the first. We started at Watters to see their Locket (formerly Wtoo) line’s new gowns. Locket by Watters is always a collection that is fresh and unique. We were blown away! We are really excited with our selections from them. 

Then we looked at some new Mother of the Bride and Groom lines to potentially bring into the store (wink wink!), and we found some gorgeous new veils that are definitely coming into the store.

After a quick lunch, we went to Madi Lane and Serene Bridal by Madi Lane. We watched their runway shows, and then we had the amazing opportunity to meet the head designer of Madi Lane, a lovely woman named Liz Young. Liz had her daughter with her who recently joined the design team– Madi Lane herself, the namesake of the brand.

A dress code is meant to make getting dressed easier, but with everything from casual celebrations to formal black-tie weddings and ultra formal white-tie affairs, knowing exactly what is expected can sometimes feel confusing.

The good news? Once you understand the basics, dressing appropriately – and looking fantastic – becomes much easier. Here’s your guide to dress codes, from casual to the most formal of all.

Casual Wedding Attire

The goal: Look put-together without looking overdressed. A casual wedding dress code gives guests the most flexibility, but casual doesn’t mean careless. Think polished, comfortable and appropriate for a celebration.

Women can wear a casual dress, a dressy skirt and blouse, a jumpsuit, or a polished pantsuit. Floral prints, soft colors and seasonal fabrics work beautifully for daytime weddings. Dress sandals, flats or low heels are appropriate.

And gentlemen, this is a perfect example of why fit matters as much as the label. An impeccably fitted suit will always look more polished than an expensive suit that doesn’t fit properly.

Black-Tie Event

Now we’re getting glamorous.

A black-tie wedding is an evening affair that calls for traditional formal wear. This is the time to embrace the opportunity to dress up.

Women: A sophisticated floor-length evening gown is expected. Think classic fabrics, refined jewelry and evening-appropriate accessories.

Men: Black tie means a tuxedo, traditionally worn with a black bow tie, white pocket square, white formal shirt, a black cummerbund or formal vest, and black patent leather dress shoes.

A tuxedo is not simply a black suit. The satin details on the lapels and trousers, along with the formal shirt and bow tie, are what give traditional black tie its distinctive appearance.

White Tie Dress Code

If you’ve received an invitation specifying white tie, congratulations—you’ve been invited to one of the most formal types of events imaginable. White tie is considerably more formal than black tie and is rarely requested for modern weddings. But when it is, the dress code should be taken literally.

Ladies wear a full-length evening gown is expected. Elegant jewelry, formal shoes and a sophisticated evening bag complete the look. Depending on the occasion and venue, long gloves may also be appropriate.

For the men, white tie requires a black tailcoat, matching formal trousers, a white piqué or Marcella waistcoat, a stiff white wing-collar shirt and a white bow tie. Formal black shoes are worn, and accessories such as white gloves may be appropriate.

This is definitely not the occasion for a standard business suit or even a traditional black tuxedo.

What About “Black Tie Optional”?

This dress code gives guests a little more flexibility, although is confusing to guests. If you opt not to dress black tie, then what do you wear?

Ladies: A formal floor-length gown is encouraged, however an elegant cocktail dress or sophisticated evening dress works beautifully.

Gentlemen: A tuxedo is encouraged, but a dark formal suit with a white dress shirt and conservative tie is also acceptable.

When in doubt, err on the side of dressing up. It’s much easier to remove a jacket or simplify accessories than to arrive noticeably underdressed.

A Few Wedding Guest Rules to Remember

No matter what the invitation says, there are a few universal guidelines worth keeping in mind.

Consider the venue. A beach wedding, historic estate, ballroom and rustic barn may all call for very different interpretations of the same dress code.

Think about the time of day. Daytime weddings tend to welcome lighter colors and fabrics, while evening celebrations generally call for deeper colors and more formal styling.

Don’t forget the season. Linen and lightweight fabrics are wonderful for summer, while velvet, wool and richer textures can be beautiful for fall and winter weddings.

Never assume that “formal” means tuxedo. Unless the invitation specifically says black tie or black tie optional, a well-tailored formal suit may be exactly right.

And remember the golden rule: Don’t outshine the couple. Guests should look polished and celebratory without dressing in a way that competes with the bride or groom.

Now that you have said yes to your dream wedding dress, the next step is wedding dress alterations. At your first fitting, your seamstress will pin the dress for the perfect fit. You will choose the right type of bustle for your gown style. 

The right choice of wedding dress bustles depend on:

• the silhouette of the dress 
• the fabric
• the train length
• your preference

What Is The Purpose Of A Bustle?

A bustle transitions your wedding gown train to floor length. 

A long train adds to the beauty of your gown, makes a grand entrance, and will give you beautiful wedding photos. For your wedding reception, however, your train will need to be bustled to allow for moving freely on the dance floor and mingling with your guests without dragging a long train behind all evening. Without a bustle, your train will be stepped on, get caught on chairs, and sweep the floor all night.

Different dresses require different types of bustles. Your seamstress will show you the right bustle options for yours. At your first fitting, he/she will pin your bustle so you can see what it will look like.

How Are Wedding Dress Bustles Made?

A bustle is made by adding a series of hooks, buttons, or ribbons to the back of the dress. 

Because the bustle is on the back of the gown, you will need your maids to help with this task. It is advised that you have your maid of honor or several of your bridesmaids to attend your final fitting and allow the bridal seamstress to show them how it is done.

If it is a complicated bustle, the hardest part will be remembering how to do it. We suggest taking a video at the final dress fitting for easy reference! This is very important to bustle the train of the gown correctly because your photographer will take photos of the back of your dress and it needs to look perfect!

What Is Best For My Gown?

American Bustle

Also known as an over bustle because the fabric is lifted and hooked over the skirt. This one will have hooks or buttons on the outside of the skirt, hidden in the intricate details of the gown (like lace or beading), so as not to be visible when fan out. These bustle pick-up points are usually placed at the waist line, although may be spaced at different levels depending on the length of your train. This style works well for longer trains and will have a number of points of attachment to ensure the proper length.

French Bustle

The French bustle is really the reverse of the American bustle. Also known as an under bustle, this ensures that there are not hooks or buttons visible on the outside of the gown when your train is fanned out. French bustle styles give a seamless look to gowns in crepe and satin fabrics by sewing a series of buttons underneath the gown instead of on the outside of the dress. It works well for gowns in column, sheath, fit & flare, and mermaid silhouettes. It is also advised for dresses with smaller trains and clean lines on the back.

Ballroom Bustle

This bustle transforms the dress silhouette from the back, essentially making the train disappear. With a ballroom bustle, it doesn’t even look like the dress has been bustled at all, but rather gives the illusion that it was a floor-length gown all along. To create a ballroom bustle, multiple bustle points are sewn around the bodice, and the fabric folds into itself delicately. This style, however, is typically the most expensive given that more bustle points need to be sewn in.

Wedding Dress Bustles: The Wristlet

Of all the various styles of bustles, this is the easiest one there is. No need for assistance from your bridal party! Also known as a wrist loop, these simple bustles have a loop that attaches to your wrist and you will physically lift your train yourself. This is a popular choice for dresses with lightweight flowy fabrics and/or simple trains.

Note: This is not the best bustle option for gowns with heavier fabrics or full skirts.

What If My Bustle Breaks?

Bustles can break. No matter how carefully your seamstress stitches your bustle, there’s always a possibility that it can break. Wedding dresses can be very heavy, and you’re relying on a few delicate bustle points to hold the whole operation in place while dancing, walking, and mingling.

So what if your bustle breaks on your wedding day? Be prepared!

Prepare for the worst case scenario by having safety pins of all sizes, a sewing needle, and clear fishing line on hand in your emergency kit in the bridal suite. If your wedding dress was bustled with ribbons and one of them comes loose, a bridesmaid can sew the ribbon back into the dress with the clear fishing line. If the problem is more complicated, you can pin the dress together at the broken bustle point with an oversized safety pin.

How Much Do Wedding Dress Bustles Cost?

The final price will depend on how many bustle points and what type of bustle you need. Bustling ball gowns with numerous pick-up points will be more expensive than a smaller silhouette. There are different ways to bustle certain dresses.

It is your personal preference what to choose with your seamstress. In general, the cost of adding a bustle to your wedding dress ranges between $50 to $250+. Don’t forget to add that cost to your overall wedding dress budget. 

More Bustling Information & Options

When trying on dresses at your bridal appointment, your bridal stylist will be able to show you different wedding dress bustles for each dress you try. Remember some can be cumbersome and heavy. If you are concerned, there are ways to get the drama without having a long train, which will require a heavier bustle.

The best way to do this is to have a dress with a shorter train, and wear a cathedral or royal length veil. The veil is worn for the wedding ceremony and photographs, and removed for the first dance and reception celebration. This way you have a lightweight bustle, with the extra flair of a veil with ornate designs or pearls and crystals!
