Why Brides Choose Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo in the Philadelphia Suburbs

Finding your wedding dress is one of the most exciting moments of the wedding planning journey. It’s more than just shopping, it’s an experience! Discovering the gown that makes you feel beautiful, confident, and completely yourself on one of the most important days of your life is core memory.

For brides throughout the Philadelphia suburbs, Bucks County, Montgomery County, and beyond, Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo has become a trusted destination for creating unforgettable wedding memories. As a family-owned bridal and formal wear boutique, we offer a personalized shopping experience that combines exceptional service, designer gowns, expert styling, and convenient options for the entire wedding party.

Let’s answer some of the most frequently asked questions so you’ll know what to expect from us!

1. The Booking and Entourage Anxiety

Do I really need an appointment at Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo?

Yes. This ensures you get a dedicated stylist and a private fitting room. If you’re thinking of walking in and trying on, it is advised to call first before making the trip. Our store books up several weeks in advance and even though our store is large enough to do multiple at a time, the reputation and national exposure we have garnered keeps us booked consistently in all rooms. We do keep a wait list. Pro Tip: Book 3-4 weeks in advance for weekends.

How many people can I bring with me?

We allow bride plus four (+4) guests as the norm. Arrangements may be made in advance for larger parties, however fewer voices mean less confusion for you, especially on a first visit. Bring the people whose opinions you genuinely value and who will uplift you, not stress you out.

Often we have brides bring 1-2 people, then have a large group come in for an abbreviated appointment with three dresses, the last dress she comes out in is her yes dress! Its a great celebration and allows the bride to choose her dress in a more focused manner, but then include everyone to share the moment.

2. The Budget Reality Check

Can I find a dress under $1,500 in the Philadelphia suburbs?

With us you can! Our made to order dresses start at $1,300. If you are sticking to a stricter budget, enjoy our year-round off the rack sample sale. Be upfront when making your appointment, and check out our Sample Closet – it changes often.

If you’ve got your eye on a specific dress, don’t blink because they move fast. Additionally, if you really are on a budget, don’t try on an expensive gown “just for fun.” Stick to the sample rack in your budget! At our store, you have a lot of choice in all budgets and sizes.

Does PA charge sales tax on wedding dresses?

While Pennsylvania is tax-free for everyday clothing, bridal gowns are subject to the standard 6% PA sales tax. (If you buy in Philadelphia, you’ll pay an extra 2% as city tax!)

Some think buying in another state will save them money – we’ve seen the trick. Trust us, do your homework. Many stores in neighboring states with “no sales tax” (like New Jersey) have a price tag higher than PA, and it’s often higher even with PA tax included! Price match before making the trip.

3. Bridal Sizing and Fitting Room Fears

What if the sample dress doesn’t fit me?

This is the number one source of anxiety for brides. Here is the absolute truth: Sample dresses will not be a perfect fit. The good thing about Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo? We are size inclusive 4-32! If the dress is too big, your stylist will use clips to cinch it in. If it is too small, we will insert privacy panels or use bands to pull it closed and give you a better idea of the shape. With our inventory, you will be able to try on dresses very close to your size.

Note: *Some boutiques only carry samples in bridal sizes 8 to 12 (which translates to street sizes approx. 4 to 8). This limits some brides and they may not have the best experience. Be sure to refer to the store’s website or call ahead. If you are plus, ask specifically how many plus size wedding dresses they have for try on. (At our store, it’s at least 75 gowns in sizes 16-32!)

4. The Timeline Crunch

How far in advance do I need to buy my dress?

If you are ordering a new dress (not buying off-the-rack, a/k/a “special order”), you need to order it 9 to 12 months before your wedding. Production and shipping can take 4-6 months. Once it arrives at our Bucks County bridal shop, you still need 2 to 3 months for alterations. If you have less than 6 months, you will likely need to pay rush fees or shop off-the-rack. At Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo, we can check shipping in real time for you.

Note: While other stores may automatically charge a rush fee if you are less than 6 months out, it may not be necessary. Be sure to ask for the shipping date!

Are alterations included in the price?

No. Whether you buy in the city or the suburbs, alterations are a separate, independent cost. In our store, you can expect to pay anywhere from $300-$600 for standard alterations (hemming, taking in the bodice, and adding a bustle). The cost fluctuates based on the skirt layers needing to be hemmed, hem lace edging, number of bustle points (hooks or buttons required), and additional adjustments like take ins, strap or sleeve adjustments, changing cup sizes, etc. In the Greater Philadelphia area or at private studio locations, expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $1,000+.

Note: Do your homework before committing to any seamstress. Read reviews, get a quote, and ask your questions to be sure you feel confident with any custom tailor before committing to the service.

Our Bridal Experience Focused on You

At Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo, every appointment is designed to be relaxed, enjoyable, and focused entirely on the bride. Rather than feeling rushed or overwhelmed, you will receive one-on-one attention from experienced bridal consultants who take the time to understand your vision, style preferences, venue, budget, and wedding-day dreams. In fact, we get your style and inspiration ahead of time. When you arrive, we can’t wait to show you what we found that matches your vision and preferences!

You can then shop our huge dress gallery (well over 400 beautiful dresses in the entire store!) to select those that call to you. Have lace ball gowns all over your Pinterest board, but somehow a sleek minimalist dress caught your eye? Try it! Think you are going with long sleeves but that delicate beaded strap stopped you? Pull it! Our team works alongside you to help guide you toward the perfect gown.

The goal isn’t simply to sell a dress—it’s to help every bride feel celebrated, supported, and confident throughout the entire process.

Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo: Designer Wedding Dresses for Every Style

Whether you’re planning an elegant ballroom wedding in Philadelphia, a rustic Bucks County barn celebration, a waterfront ceremony, or an intimate urban micro-wedding, you’ll find options that suit both your aesthetic and your budget.
One Destination for Dresses, Suits, Tuxedos, and Mother Gowns

One of the biggest advantages of shopping at Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo is the ability to coordinate wedding attire for the entire wedding party under one roof.

After saying “yes” to the dress, couples can simplify the planning process by selecting tuxedos and suits for grooms, groomsmen, fathers, and every member of the wedding party. From classic black tuxedos and timeless navy suits to modern slim-fit styles and fashion-forward formal wear, there are options to complement virtually every wedding theme and color palette.

Our exceptional services also include special occasion Mother of the Bride & Groom gowns including renowned designers like Montage by Mon Cheri, Alexander by Daymor, Rina DiMontella, LaFemme, and more. Mothers also enjoy a positive experience with size-inclusive gowns in great price ranges.

Having bridal gowns, tuxedos and suits, and mother’s dresses managed by the same experienced team helps ensure a cohesive look while making communication and coordination significantly easier. Couples appreciate the convenience of working with one trusted partner for their big day rather than juggling multiple vendors. We can make your entire bridal party look perfect!

Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo is owned by Franco and Wendy Salerno. We founded the store in January, 2013 with a mission of running an honest, kind, and family-oriented bridal and tuxedo business. The name is a combination of our two daughters, Daria and Deanna. Today, our business is a Bucks County staple and the go-to place for wedding attire. Our long-time employees are kind, genuine, and truly part of the family. The lasting relationships we have made with customers, vendors, and designers are something we are truly grateful for.

Nationally Recognized, Locally Loved

Our store received national recognition in July, 2025 on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. In 2024, Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo was named a Top 100 Small Business in America by the US Chamber of Commerce. We surpassed 1,000 Google reviews with a 4.9 rating, and are listed in the Knot’s “Hall of Fame”.

Locally, we are active members of the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce, the Montco Gateway Chamber of Commerce (formerly the Eastern Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce), and the Lower Bucks County Chamber of Commerce serving on committees and as board members. He was also a board member of the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce for many years.

Listen to this blog as a podcast:

Owning a bridal store is not anything I envisioned when I was younger. It took my daughter being asked to multiple proms for the idea to even come to me. There was nothing close by so I decided our family business was going to be a bridal and tuxedo store.

Did I know the excitement it would bring, and the genuine connection I would make with the kind and talented individuals I would hire throughout the years? I had no idea. And it never occurred to me that anyone on my team would be a bridal stylist while engaged herself. Now it almost seems like a pre requisite.

One of the most magical moments of working in a bridal salon is when the bride says yes to her perfect wedding dress. It is a core memory she will never forget.

When your bridal stylist is also engaged and planning her own wedding, it is that much more relatable. Brides feel like they have a friend who understands not only the excitement, but the anxiety as well.

What Is It Like To Be Engaged and Surrounded By Wedding Dresses?

“It’s like Christmas,” is what our very own Daria said about being a bridal stylist while engaged. “I was able to pick out dresses to bring into the store with myself, a bride-to-be, in mind. I knew I made the right choice after I went to Chicago bridal market and saw all the new styles. There was no second-guessing, I still loved MY dress the most.”

Note: Daria has obviously been with us since the store opened and I had lost count of the number of dresses she tried on and claimed to be “the one”. Before she had a ring. Before she even had a boyfriend. Coincidentally (or not, I do not believe in coincidences), I sent her a picture of a dress that I thought was gorgeous. She replied with, “I was looking at that one, too!” She brought it in, tried it on with me, and got tears for the first and only time. We both knew that was it.

L-R Deanna, Jeff, Daria, Wendy & Franco at the Elkins Estate 12-31-24

Daria and Sarah got engaged within a month of each other. The in-store energy and outside bride hype for them was over the top!

For Sarah, she was worried that being around so many dresses would make it impossible to choose. “I thought I would never be able to decide on one, but the saying is true. When you find your dress, you get this feeling and you don’t ever want to change your mind.”

She also loves the unique sharing experience she gets with her brides. “We chat and connect so much while in the dressing room. The dress search and planning is fresh for me. I know what brides are thinking and that helps them so much.”

And now it is that time for the newest member of our dream team, Kylie! Her wedding is two years away, but seeing brides every day and talking about wedding planning keeps the excitement going. She decided to write about her experience and the meaningful moments she finds in her unique position.

If you’re engaged, you may find the perfect place to work is a bridal store!

Kylie’s Experience As A Bridal Stylist While Engaged

Every day, I walk into work and am greeted by hundreds of beautiful wedding dresses. We begin our day preparing the store for our incredible customers, and I start by pulling dresses for our first bridal appointment. I see the bride’s Pinterest board and envision her at her chosen venue. The excitement begins to build immediately.

When the bride walks in, there’s already a smile on my face because I know I’m about to help create an unforgettable experience. As we look through dresses together and find the perfect ones to try on, I get to hear all about her wedding plans. With each conversation, I find myself relating more and more to our brides.

Planning a wedding is such a beautiful experience, but it can also be incredibly stressful. I know firsthand how meaningful it is to have someone simply listen. Being able to offer our brides a safe space to pause, breathe, and truly enjoy the process is something I value so much.

As a bride gets closer to making her decision, I’m often covered in goosebumps and filled with joy, knowing how lucky I am to be part of such a special moment.

You might be wondering: how do you choose your own dress when you’re surrounded by beautiful gowns every day?

Honestly, it was easier than I expected.

One day at Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo, I tried on three dresses with my mom, future mother-in-law, and sister there to watch the magic unfold. The moment I put the one on, I knew. There was no doubt in my mind.

At the time, I was still more than two years away from my wedding, but I was ready to say yes. Even though I’m surrounded by gorgeous dresses every day, that feeling has never changed. I’ve tried on countless other gowns to better understand what our brides experience and how each style feels, but I always come back to my dress.

That feeling is truly unlike any other, when you know, you know.

Going through this process as a bridal stylist while engaged has given me a deeper understanding of what our brides are experiencing. It has allowed me to support them in a way I couldn’t before.

So, what is it truly like to work at a bridal shop while engaged?

It’s magical.

Wedding dress shopping is one of the most exciting parts of planning your big day, and we want to make sure you have the best experience possible at your bridal appointment.

As bridal stylists, we’ve helped countless brides find their dream dress, and along the way, we’ve learned a few things that can make the process smoother and even more enjoyable. There are some helpful tips and insights that can make your appointment stress-free, fun, and successful. If you want to get the most out of your visit, especially if it is your first wedding dress appointment (and actually enjoy the experience), here are 8 things we wish you knew before stepping into the bridal salon.

1. Do Your Research, But Keep an Open Mind

The starting point of your bridal appointment will be going over your saved dress inspiration photos! Pinterest boards and Instagram saves are great for inspiration, but keep in mind that your dream dress might not be what you think it is. Many brides fall in love with a wedding dress style online, only to realize it doesn’t flatter them the way they imagined.

I personally have had numerous brides walk in telling me that they wanted sleek and simple yet said yes to a big sparkly ball gown. And I cannot count how many times a bride has told me “absolutely nothing strapless” only to walk out with a strapless bridal gown.

We wish you knew that you can trust the expertise of your bridal stylist and be willing to try something out of your comfort zone.

2. Bring the Right People To Your Bridal Appointment

Your entourage can make or break your dress shopping experience. Many brides want to be people pleasers and bring all of their closest friends, extended family members, possibly their future mother and sister in law. This is not the time to be a people pleaser.

Bring trusted people whose opinions truly matter to you—those who will support your vision and understand your personal style. Make sure that the people needed are present for your appointment (whether in person or over video call). There is nothing worse than watching a bride light up when she finds her dress only to watch that light dim when she realizes she cannot yet celebrate the moment since someone important to her is not there.

Saying yes with mom, dad, and sister on Facetime

We wish you knew to choose your entourage wisely and make sure they are present to take in your “yes” moment with you.

3. You Do Not Need Special Undergarments

This is the most frequently asked question we receive when setting a bridal appointment. Wedding dresses are built with cups in the bodice, and typically have plenty of structure within the composition of the gown. We usually recommend just wearing nude underwear! There is no need for a strapless bra or shape wear unless you are planning on wearing them on your wedding day.

Many dresses have sheer backs, side cut outs, low backs, or plunges that can make wearing undergarments tricky due to lack of coverage. It is better to try them without these undergarments so you can get an idea of how the dress will truly fit you if you are not able to wear these with your gown. However, if you know that you absolutely will be wearing shape wear or a bra, you should plan to wear those to your appointment to determine if the dress will be feasible or what alterations may need to be made to accommodate your plan!

Inside construction of a wedding gown

We wish you knew that most wedding dresses are highly structured with built in support so you do not need special undergarments at your bridal appointment.

4. Know Your Budget (And Be Honest About It)

We want to help you find the dress, not just a dress you fall in love with and can’t afford. Be upfront about your budget so we can pull options that work for you. At Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo, we have new gowns to order that will fit in most budgets, and offer a large selection off the rack that allows us to get you a gorgeous gown at a lower cost.

Keep in mind that alterations, accessories, and taxes will add to the final cost. You can also search for bridal boutiques that have designers in your price range, and those offering a sample sale or a trunk shows with a price point that fits.

We wish you knew you can be honest and up front with your wedding dress budget.

5. Be Ready to Say Yes

This advice is at your own discretion, but allow us to explain. Many brides don’t expect to find the one during their first bridal appointment, but it happens all the time!

If you find a dress you love, don’t feel like you have to keep looking just because you expected the process to take longer. We have had a lot of brides start at our store, try on a dozen dresses, and find an absolute favorite. But other appointments were made for that day so off they went, losing that special moment to say yes to that perfect dress. After visiting three more bridal stores and 40 more dresses tried on, they came back at the end of the day to say yes.

Sometimes there are special offers for brides who say yes on their first visit or during a trunk show that you can only take advantage of that day. We also advise that you say yes when you know it is your dress because our inventory and this industry is ever-changing.

We have had brides who fell in love with a dress who left only to find that it had sold out of the store by the time they wanted to return. In some cases, the gown could still be ordered, but we did not have it any longer for the bride to try on. If she had planned on buying the sample at the discounted price, it would be no longer available at that price, nor would it be available at all had it been a discontinued sample. Also, price changes can and do happen at a moments notice at the hands of the designers.

We wish you knew you can trust your gut and know when it is time to say “yes”!

6. A Special Order Wedding Gown Takes Time to Arrive

Wedding dresses are not like regular clothes you can grab off the rack. Most gowns take 4-6 months to arrive, plus time for alterations. Plan your dress shopping timeline with enough time in advance of your special day! This will allow you the most flexibility in finding your dream gown without limitation.

That is not to say that you are out of options if you are working on a shorter timeline! If your wedding is coming up soon, be open to sample dresses or rush/quick ship options. Some rush and quick ship options will incur a rush fee, so please keep this in mind if you are dress shopping closer to your wedding day. We have worked with brides whose weddings were the very next day, so do not panic if you have a shorter timeline.

We wish you knew the best time to shop for your wedding dress is 9 to 12 months before your wedding date!

7. You’re Beautiful As You Are

We hear it all the time—brides apologizing for their body shape in the dressing room, being anxious about their weight or a part they do not like, or simply feeling insecure.

Remember:

the dress is meant to fit you, not the other way around

we are ALL different shapes with different styles

your bridal consultant wants to bring you dresses with the right fit that you will love

We have sample sizes ranging from size 2 all the way up to 32, so you will have options close to size in our store. Just know going into the process that some dresses will be too big, some too small, and some just right. Also keep in mind that brides rarely fit into a perfect size – every bride requires alterations to make their dress fit to their unique body type. No matter your size or shape, you deserve to (and WILL) feel stunning in your gown!

We wish you knew real brides come in every shape and size and there is a perfect wedding dress out there for every one of them.

8. Trust the Bridal Appointment Process

Our job is to give you a great experience and help you find dresses that make you feel amazing. We know how these gowns fit, which styles will highlight your best features, and how to guide you through the entire process.

Committing to your dream wedding dress is a big decision and quite possibly the best part of the wedding planning process. Once you have your venue, date, and wedding dress, everything else can fall into place with your aesthetic in mind.

We wish you knew that you can let us do what we do best – provide you with the best wedding dress shopping experience!

Final Advice

There are many wedding dress boutiques that you can visit for a bridal dress appointment. Each store will provide a unique experience. Most will have all the dress styles available to try, hair ties and high heels in the changing room, however inquire before booking if you are looking for something specific such as:

a certain designer like Madi Lane or Essense of Australia

the basque waist silhouette

a particular fabric like crepe or Mikado

plus sizes

a type of appointment where food and drinks are provided or large groups are accommodated

Bridal shopping should be a fun and memorable experience. By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be setting yourself up for success—and walking away with a dress you absolutely love!

Buying your wedding dress too early can cause dress regret! We know there is nothing like the excitement of shopping for your wedding gown. For many brides-to-be, saying “YES” to the dress is one of the most anticipated parts of wedding planning. However, buying too early is not recommended.

We have seen a huge uptick in long engagements in the aftermath of the pandemic and brides are eager to get the ball rolling. But when should you really get serious about wedding dress shopping?

The Scenario

You need to be prepared for the fact that you may just fall in love with a dress when you had no intention of finding it. This happens with brides who have wedding dates over a year out. They shop to get “style ideas” sometimes 18-24 months before the wedding and end up falling head over heels with a dress. They say yes and celebrate and leave euphoric.

This is a very real situation that many brides are faced with when they begin to shop earlier than they are prepared to. We have seen brides with wear dates 2.5 years into the future impulse buy. They say yes on the spot.

It could be the next day, or many months down the road, that nagging feeling pops up, “I said yes too early.” You have wedding dress regret.

We have also had brides who did not say yet call back a year later to retry the dress they loved only to find that it has been discontinued or sold out of the store. Sometimes even newer style dresses are discontinued with moments notice. Do not assume that a gown is safe because it is a recent style. These brides have dress regret for NOT saying yes earlier.

If you are a bride whose wedding is over a year out, consider what you would do in this situation.

Saying Yes Too Early

You have plenty of time, well over a year until you tie the knot. You decide to go dress shopping just to see what’s out there. We know it’s hard to wait to try on dresses! It is an incredibly exciting time, but can also be an overwhelming experience. Let’s say you end up saying “yes!” to that dress and the next day you realize you made an impulse buy. You got caught up in the moment and feel like you made a mistake.

Or: you are in love with the dress you chose, but start seeing the newly released designs showing up on social media. You are comparing your dress to the ones you are seeing online in bridal groups. Hmm, you did not try on anything like that. Now you are feeling a sense of regret thinking about all of the dresses that you have missed out on.

Or: perhaps your body has changed/is changing and the dress does not fit the way it did when you purchased it. So what do you do?

Retry Your Dress

Your first step is to retry on your dress to see if you still love it.

More often than not, a bride experiencing dress regret has not retried the dress on and forgot all of the little details that were not picked up on their phone cameras. Add some accessories while you try it on (like a veil, jewelry, the shoes you may wear, etc.) to see if you just needed to see the full day-of look together. Sometimes seeing the bigger picture with your entire final bridal look can really help reignite the spark that made you fall for the dress in the first place!

You Still Love It, But…:

Okay, this is a good sign! Maybe you have some ideas to make it a bit more like some of the dresses you didn’t get to try? Take it to a seamstress! See if there are options available to make some customizations to the dress. Small tweaks can make a huge difference! There are a number of incredible seamstresses out there that can completely transform a dress. Chat with one to find the little tweaks that you are looking for.

If your body has changed but you still love your dress, explore options with your seamstress. You’ll need to discuss the intricacies of your specific dress, additional fabric needs, and the cost associated with doing the work.

This Isn’t My Dress:

If you put the dress on and you know in your heart that this is not the dress that you want to walk down the aisle in, you are going to need to find a different gown.

This option will obviously be adding onto your budget and, depending on timing, you may be limited on options due to ordering times. You can always consider off-the-rack options or quick ship gowns, but each has pros and cons that you will need to take into account.

Off-the-rack tend to be a more cost efficient option for the gown itself, but may be more costly in necessary alterations if the dress isn’t the size that you need. You may be a bit more limited in choice due to needing to stick in a certain size range. You may get lucky though and find a perfect option in your size!

Quick ship dresses give you the flexibility of ordering a brand new gown in the desired size and color, but often have rush fees associated.

If you are having dress regret and are reading this thinking that we are trying to dissuade you from getting a new dress, please know that is NOT what we want to do. We understand the importance of being comfortable and being in a dress that you love on one of the biggest days of your life! We do, however, believe it is important that you fully understand the financial and time constraints that dress regret can cause due to shopping too early.

What Do I Do With The Dress I Don’t Want?

There are several ways to go when you said yes, too early and don’t want the dress anymore. You can:

Repurpose it into your shower dress or your rehearsal dinner dress – take it to your seamstress, have it cut down and modified!

Sell it online (list on sites like Stillwhite, Poshmark, and Facebook bride groups)

Consign it locally

Donate to Brides Across America or Wish Upon a Wedding

Advice To Avoid Wedding Dress Regret

Our best advice for the bride with a wedding date that is a while away is to set a reasonable dress shopping timeline. We recommend purchasing your dress 9-12 months out.

Many brides think that they should book an appointment right away. Some shop as soon as they get engaged – before a venue is even chosen or date set – to determine styles that they like and what looks best on their body. This is not the way to go.

Your date and venue will factor in when determining the dress. And when you begin trying on, finding your perfect wedding dress is a natural part of what happens during a bridal appointment. Your bridal stylist listens to your feedback and adjusts your try on selection accordingly. Booking an appointment 9-12 months before your wedding date also ensures you will see the latest collections (the dresses you will be seeing on social media!) and less chance of feeling buyers remorse.

If you feel that you are ready to seriously shop, or if you have a schedule that makes it difficult to arrange shopping appointments, you absolutely should consider beginning sooner. Dress shopping is exciting, and we completely understand why you are eager to get a head start on it! But trust us – you will save yourself many headaches if you wait until a bit closer to the wedding.

Best Time To Shop

Wedding planning is one of the most exciting times in your life. It can also cause some anxiety. As you can see, shopping for your dress too early can fall into both the “exciting” time and the “anxiety” part. All brides are different too, there is no right or wrong when you are shopping for your wedding dress. In our experience, however, it is best to shop when you have your venue booked and your date chosen, 9-12 months prior. See our Wedding Planning Guides for timelines and advice for Brides, Grooms, and Mothers!

You have been asked to go shopping for wedding dresses with a bride-to-be, how exciting! Whether the bride is your daughter, sister, niece, or best friend, the importance of being asked to go along is flattering. It shows that the bride values not only your company, but your opinion on her bridal gown choice as well. Now, what is the appropriate guest attire?

We previously wrote a blog on Guest Etiquette and how to be the best guest at bridal appointments. It is a popular blog with practical advice on how to support the bride as she searches for her dream dress. Many people comment on it asking the same question:

What should I wear to attend bridal appointments?

We are happy to address the question of guest attire and can give you our opinions based on thousands of bridal appointments with all size guest counts. These are general rules and of course will not apply to everyone, however these tips are good to know:

Guest Attire Tips

1. First and foremost: do not wear white. In the bridal world, white and ivory are reserved for the bride. Please do not wear white, even if it is printed, floral, or block. This color is for her.

2. Be less formal than the bride (i.e. watch the high heeled shoes, bodycon dresses, flashy jewelry, etc.). If you walk into a store as a group, the bride should be somewhat distinguishable based on attire.

3. Is there another activity included, such as lunch, drinks, or dinner? If so, you will want to wear something appropriate for that activity as well. In the summer perhaps a pastel dress or jumpsuit; in the winter, a sweater dress and boots.

4. Are there multiple appointments planned for the day? If so, be sure what you wear is comfortable enough to be seated for extended periods of time (most bridal appointments are 90 minutes) as well as travel time. Make sure your footwear is appropriate for ‘quick walking’, as you may not have much time to spare between appointments.

5. Layers! This may seem obvious, but it is worth repeating. Regardless of the season, a sweater, scarf, or light jacket is recommended. The temperatures of stores can very greatly and keeping cool or staying warm will allow your focus to be on the bride.

6. Watch the length. If you are wearing shorts or a short skirt, be mindful of the length. There are many mirrors in bridal boutiques! Not only that, you may be standing/sitting/bending multiple times during an appointment (perhaps to get a closer look up the dress or to help fluff out the train). You don’t want a wardrobe malfunction. Also, many photos are taken during this time and if you are wearing a short dress or skirt, be very mindful of the angles caught in mirrors!

In Addition

Most of us have a few go to outfits that we can dress up or down, depending on the shoes and accessories we wear with it. Our suggestion regarding guest attire is to wear something you feel good in that shows you are pleased to attend without overshadowing the bride.

As the group is preparing for the wedding dress shopping trip, you can check in with the bride and family members to check in about the details of the day. Do not be only one wearing sweat pants, nor do you want to be the only one decked out.

If you need a little more assistance, look at the websites of the bridal shops you will be visiting. Some bridal stores have a staff section on their website and read about their bridal stylist or consultants, their guest limit, or helpful tips relating to their bridal salon specifically. This can be helpful to understand the culture of the store and it’s employees when choosing your own attire.

NOTE: If you are mother of the bride or groom the appointment and intend to try on for yourself at the same appointment, it is a good idea for you to have a strapless bra and or shape wear, a pair of your own heels, and hair ties if you have long hair so you can see the neck lines of the dresses. Make sure the bridal store allows for this prior to arriving, you may need a separate appointment for MOB/G shopping.

Social Media Influence

Social media and Tik Tok in particular has added another dimension to appointments and guest attire. Not only do brides find dresses this way, they also have ideas on how their first wedding dress appointment should run, who should be there and what they (the bride and guests) should wear.

We have seen brides come in wearing “Bride” pageant sashes over white lacey dresses with tiaras; groups with custom T-shirts designating bride, maid of honor, bridesmaid, and mother of the bride and groom; bridesmaids coordinate dressing in their bridesmaid dress or wedding colors.

We once had a very large group of 20 that came in with a bride and they were definitely not all dressed alike – some were very formal and others much less so. They brought signs to hold up as they rated each wedding dress style. This was one of the largest bride tribes that we have ever hosted. We do not suggest having groups of this size. While it can be a fun experience, there are a lot of questions and so many different opinions that the main goal of finding the bride’s perfect dress is lost.

We have also had brides come alone, or with their mothers only. The number of guests depends on the bride.

Our bridal appointments average a small group of 2 to 4 guests which makes for a lovely experience, especially when it is her first bridal appointment!
What is the perfect wedding dress?

The perfect dress is different for every bride. Depending on her venue, season formality, body shape, etc. she will have any number of dresses to try. In fact, there are so many different options that in order to make this easier to read, we will use current trends that you may be familiar with if you are searching for your dream dress now!

We always recommend to our brides to keep an open mind and try on a variety of styles to find the one that makes them feel perfect. Some brides will say they know exactly what they want, only to try it on and be disappointed.

Before heading out for your wedding dress appointment, familiarize yourself with the common silhouettes and fabrics that follow:

1. Wedding Dress Silhouettes

We start out with the silhouette. There are five main shapes when it comes to bridal gowns, which are:

A-line, Ball Gown, Fit and Flare, Mermaid & Sheath

The A line gown is so named because the full skirt is shaped like the letter A. This silhouette can have any number of neck, lines or sleeves, but it is typically designed with a fitted bodice and a natural waist connecting to an A line skirt. These are made in most any fabric, can range from plain sophistication to full beaded glam, and are flattering on every body type.

Ballgowns are quite similar to A line, but have a much fuller skirt. In addition, ball gowns can have waistlines including natural, dropped, and basque waists. The A line and ball gown dresses are easy to move and dance in, however, certain ball gown styles will have a longer and heavier train, which will require a more elaborate bustle. This is the the perfect silhouette for a traditional, formal wedding.

Ballgown silhouette in satin with a basque waist

Fit and Flare gowns, also known as ‘trumpet gowns’, is fitted through the bodice, hips, and mid thigh where it then flares out. There is normally no designated waistline on a fit and flare gown, and this tends to elongate the body. These are not always recommended for petite brides (under 5’4″) as much of the skirt may need to be hemmed off, unless she is planning on wearing a substantial heel.

The Mermaid dress is similar to the fit and flare, with the distinction being a much more dramatically flared skirt. Picture the fin on a mermaid and you get the idea. Mermaid gowns are normally very tight, sometimes down almost to the knee. Very sexy and the perfect dress to accentuate hourglass figures, the mermaid will be more difficult to move in.

The Sheath gown is also known as a column dress. They are a straight cut and simple design, and the sheath silhouette is a popular choice for modern brides.

Sheath silhouette in crepe with slit skirt

The below trend graphic illustrates the silhouettes that our brides purchased in 2023. As you can see, the A-line was the overwhelming favorite, with fit and flare (what we call “fitted” for short) in second place:

2. Wedding Dress Fabrics

Choosing the best fabric for your wedding gown may come down to your venue and or season. For instance, if you are having a summer wedding on the beach, you may not want to choose heavier fabrics, like satin or Mikado. Similarly, if you are having your wedding on a snow-capped mountain, a lightweight fabric would not make much sense.

However, let’s go over the most common fabrics available.

Satin, Crepe, Lace, Organza, Tulle, Chiffon, Jacquard,

Wedding dress fabrics

Satin is a luxurious fabric and can be in a variety of forms, such as Dutchess, mikado, slipper, and charmeuse. The first two are thick and heavy with a gloss shine, very formal and often used in ball gown silhouettes because it will easily keep its shape. Slipper and charmeuse are lighter with the same high gloss but not as thick. These are more often in the sheath shape or as a layer underneath lace. The best quality satin is made from pure silk, however, this is very expensive.

Crepe is a type of silk fabric with a crisp, clean appearance. Comfortable and breathable, this is a lovely and soft fabric for a wedding dress because of its luster on the front and a matte finish back. Most crepe fabric dresses will be in a sheath or slim a line silhouette.

Lace fabric dresses also come in a number of different types such as Venice, Alençon, corded, and Chantilly lace. Lace is a lovely and romantic choice for a wedding dress. You can match the type of lace with the overall look of your wedding theme, for instance, a corded or laser cut lace is perfect for a Boho theme, whereas Alençon would work for a traditional formal wedding.

Lace, fit and flare

Organza is a very pretty, thin, and lightweight fabric type easily identifiable from its smoothness and its shine. This sheer fabric is traditionally made from silk woven with synthetic fibers suc,h as nylon or polyester. Organza can be tiered or layered on the skirt and often in an a line shape, and is also the perfect fabric for a ruffled skirt on a fit and flare or mermaid style of dress.

Organza, A-line in blush

Tulle is an airy fabric and a form of netting that is made with very small openings. It is a stiff weave, unlike it soft and stretchy counterpart English net. Many veils and skirts are made of this type of fabric.

As you will see from the below graphic, our fabric trend for 2023 was overwhelmingly tulle, with Mikado and crepe tied for second place:

3. Wedding Dress Embellishments

Unless you are specifically wanting a plain dress, chances are you will want some embellishments. Embellishments include beads, crystals, rhinestones, sequins, appliqué, embroidery, and lace edging. Any of the fabrics above can have embellishments.

You can also have embellishments in your accessory pieces, such as veils, headpieces, belts, capes, bows, sleeves, or jackets.

It is a great idea to find photos of dresses that you like to show your stylist. Once you begin trying on, you will know quickly what you like and what looks best on you. Once you find the silhouette and fabric, you can find the details that you love, like neckline, straps or sleeves, back features, and train lengths.

This is an exciting time and a very big decision as you go on the hunt for the best dress you will ever wear. Take your time and we tell our brides, “You will know when you found the one!”

Research Styles and Trends

Take some time to go through Pinterest, bridal sites and magazines. See what is trending and if any appeal to you. Are you a sparkly princess bride, or a modern bride? Do you love big ruffle ballgowns or straight column dresses? What is your body type? Maybe you love the latest trends and are very fashion forward – and doing a little research will show you what is out there and what is on the horizon.

If this is not you, the classic and traditional will always be available and in style. Read blogs on subjects like fabrics, necklines, sleeves, body shapes, train lengths, etc.

Set a Budget

Determine your budget for the wedding gown, including any alterations and accessories and communicate that information. This will help your bridal stylist narrow down options that stay in budget. If you are a bride on a strict budget, some boutiques offer sample sales and trunk shows with discounts!

Choose Your Entourage Wisely

Select a few close friends or family members whose opinions you value. Too many opinions can be overwhelming and cause delays in the appointment flow. Keep the guest count small and supportive. Remember, it’s your dress and ultimately your decision.

We encourage brides to come with one or two people to find the dress and then make a separate appointment for a large group to come for the reveal! It is so much fun and the bride absolutely glows when she come out of the fitting room in her dream dress!

Book Appointments in Advance

Bridal boutiques can get busy, especially on weekends. Schedule your appointments well in advance to ensure you have plenty of time to explore different options and not feel rushed. If you do not like crowds, ask the store when the best time would be to come for a more private experience.

Consider the Wedding Venue and Theme

Think about the venue and season of your wedding. Your dress should complement the setting and theme. Discuss these details with your stylist and she can help guide you. (Be prepared, though, because you may try on a dress you never expected that turns out to be the one!)

Wear the Right Undergarments

Bring or wear the appropriate undergarments, such as a strapless bra and seamless underwear, to try on dresses more comfortably. This can give you a better idea of how each dress will look on your wedding day. Many dresses come with built in features like bust cups and corsets that will not require special undergarments or shape wear, however you may be more comfortable during the appointment wearing these.

Research the Bridal Stores

Look into the designers that the store carries, do they match your personal style and theme? Read the bridal salon’s policies (usually an FAQ section on their website), such as whether they allow photographs, how many guests they allow, the accepted payment methods, and any specific guidelines for appointments. Ask questions. Do they charge for appointments or require a credit card? What is the price range? Do they offer other services such as menswear, mother dresses, accessories? How do they handle issues?

Read reviews! Being informed will help you prepare for your visit.

Eat Before You Go

Do not go wedding dress shopping on an empty stomach. It is a good idea to have a light meal or something that will hold you over for a few hours and bring water. Save the bigger meal (and the alcohol) for the “I Said Yes” celebration afterward! Please do not drink alcohol before or during your appointment.

Bring Inspiration Photos

We have our brides send us photos and their Pinterest board in advance of their appointment so our stylists know the theme and vibe. This will streamline the process and makes a bride’s shopping experience more efficient. If the salon(s) you choose do not do that, make sure to bring photos or have them on your phone to show. Keep an open mind to dress suggestions! Just because you love a dress on a model doesn’t mean it’s the right one for you.

Bring Your Questions

Come prepared with a list of questions for the bridal consultant. Ask about the availability of the dresses, the ordering process, and the estimated delivery time. How easy it it to communicate with them if you need assistance? Clear communication will help manage your expectations.

Trying On

You and your bridal consultant have chosen a number of different dresses and you are in the dressing room. If this is your first bridal appointment, trying on that first gown is a very special moment!

Important: Wedding gown sample sizes are not like regular sizes! Whatever your normal size is, your dress will be at least one to two sizes larger. Do NOT let the size phase you! If the dress is too large, your consultant will clip it down. If it is snug, she can add some fabric to the back so you are not exposed. Dresses are long so you may want to bring your own heels (if you have your wedding shoes, definitely bring them!).

At Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo, we hold on to the favorite(s) to try on again at the end and add accessories to see the total bridal look! Some brides have a gut feeling and know when they have on their perfect wedding dress; others need time to process the details of the dress, how the dress fits and looks in pictures, etc.

The last thing the consultant should do is push you if you aren’t ready. Too much pressure is unnecessary and can not only ruin the appointment, but lead to dress regret by being pushed into saying yes.

Enjoy The Experience

Shopping for wedding dresses is a memorable and very special experience. Enjoy the process and be open to trying on different styles. Trust your instincts and your stylist! Our stylists truly want to help you find the perfect dress and celebrate with you. Most importantly, savor the excitement of saying YES to the dress because it will be a memory that lasts a lifetime!

If you have more questions, text us at 215-491-8500 or contact us, we are happy to answer! From wedding gowns to tuxedos and mother of the bride/groom dresses, Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo has your wedding attire covered!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

As you embark on the step of making your wedding dress appointment, there are a few important things to consider beforehand.

Follow this ultimate guide to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience as you search for the best dress of your life!

Research Styles and Trends:

Start by exploring different wedding dress styles and trends. Browse bridal magazines, Pinterest, and wedding websites to gather inspiration. Having a general idea of what you like (and do not like!) will help guide you during your appointment. Keep an open mind to suggestions made by your bridal stylist. She will know the inventory, listen to your feedback, and help lead you to your dream dress!

Set a Budget:

Determine your dress budget, including any alterations and accessories. This will help the bridal consultants narrow down options that align with your budget and stay in your price point. It is very easy to go over budget when wedding planning so if you have a top price for the dress, stick to it! Don’t forget to look for trunk shows and sample sales to save money.

Choose Your Entourage Wisely:

Select a few close friends or family members whose opinions you value. Too many opinions can be overwhelming and can delay or disrupt the flow of the appointment, so keep the group small and supportive. Remember, it’s ultimately your decision. It is a good idea for your first appointment to just bring one or two important people with you. You can always go back a second time with a larger group.

Book Appointments in Advance:

You should plan to make your first wedding dress shopping appointment 9 to 12 months prior to your wedding day. Remember that bridal boutiques can get busy, especially on weekends, and some of the best bridal shops book up well in advance. Schedule your appointment to ensure you have enough time to explore different options and not feel rushed.

*If you do not like crowds or have sensory/mobility issues, ask the store for the best time to come for a quieter experience.

Consider the Wedding Venue and Theme:

Think about the venue and overall theme of your wedding. Your dress should complement the setting, season, and reflect the style you envision for your special day. Share this information with your bridal stylist.

Wear the Proper Undergarments:

Bring or wear the appropriate undergarments, such as a strapless bra and seamless underwear, to try on dresses more comfortably. This will also give you a better idea of how each dress will look on your wedding day. Many wedding dresses are made with shape ware, built-in bras, corsets, and bust cups, so you may not need these additional garments on your wedding day. If you have long hair, bring hair ties with you so that you can see the necklines, front and back, of each dress. If you have your wedding shoes, bring them along to try on with the favorites!

Research the Bridal Salon:

Look into the bridal store’s reputation and policies. Do they allow photographs, offer other services like a menswear department, mother dresses, and/or accessories? What is their price range and accepted payment methods? What are their sample sizes? Are there any specific guidelines for appointments? Read their reviews and recommendations, check out their social media accounts. Being informed will help you prepare for your visit.

Bring Inspiration Photos:

Bring a few images of dresses you love to help the consultant understand your style preferences. Ideally, share your Pinterest board so she can get your whole vibe! This will also streamline the process and make your shopping experience more efficient. Be mindful that dresses you like on models may not look the same on you. Trust your stylist’s picks if you get stuck, she will get you out of your comfort zone and into your dream wedding dress!

Prepare Questions:

Come prepared with a list of questions for the bridal consultant. In addition to the aboce questions under “Research”, ask about the availability of the dresses, the ordering process, sizing charts, and the estimated delivery time. How can you contact them if you need immediate assistance? How long are the appointments? Is there a maximum number of dresses you can try? Can you choose your own dresses or do they bring you dresses? Clear communication will help manage your expectations.

Enjoy the Experience:

A typical Bridal appointment will have you and the stylist in a dressing room where she will zip and clip you into each dress. If you prefer privacy, she can wait outside and come in when you are ready. Be honest if you are feeling uncomfortable, she definitely wants you to enjoy your experience. If you like a dress, she will keep it aside, if you do not, it will be returned to the rack. Once you have some favorite dresses narrowed down, you can try them on again with a pair of shoes having your preferred heel height and match them with the perfect accessories. This is when the magic happens.

Finding your perfect dress is a special experience and a core memory. Enjoy the process, and be open to trying on different styles during your wedding dress appointment. Trust your instincts, and most importantly, savor the exciting time of saying YES to the dress!

Your bridal gown is one of the most important elements of your wedding day, and finding the perfect dress involves more than just choosing a beautiful design.

When you schedule your bridal gown appointment, it’s crucial to come prepared with thoughtful questions to ensure you make the best decision for your big day. Let’s go over the top 10 questions you should ask during your wedding dress appointment to make the experience enjoyable and stress-free.

Wedding Dress Appointment Questions:

1. What silhouette will flatter my body type?

Understanding your body type is key to finding a dress that accentuates your best features. Ask the bridal stylist for guidance on the most flattering silhouettes for your shape.

Fitted

A-line

2. What fabrics work best for my wedding season?

Depending on your wedding date and location, the season can impact your choice of fabric. Inquire about fabrics that are suitable for the climate and time of year to ensure comfort on your special day.

3. Can I customize the dress?

Many bridal designers and shops offer customization options. Ask about the possibility of altering certain elements such as neckline, sleeve length, or adding embellishments to make the gown uniquely yours.

4. What accessories complement this dress?

Accessories can enhance your bridal look. Inquire about accessories like veils, headpieces, and belts that pair well with the dress to complete and elevate your ensemble.

5. What undergarments are recommended?

The right undergarments can significantly impact the fit and look of your gown. Ask for recommendations on the best undergarments to wear during your appointment, fittings, and on your wedding day.

6. Is there a payment plan or financing options?

Wedding dresses can be a significant investment. Inquire about payment plans or financing options to make sure the gown aligns with your budget without compromising on your dream dress. Consider trunk shows and sample sales, too, where there may be discounts.

7. How are alterations scheduled?

Understand how your dress size will be determined, and the subsequent alterations process. Some may have “in-house” seamstresses who work for the store with set prices. Others have recommended professionals who work for themselves and set their own pricing. Be aware for budgeting.

8. What is the lead time for ordering and alterations?

Knowing the lead time for ordering and alterations is crucial for planning purposes. Make sure to ask about the shipping to ensure your gown arrives well before your wedding day.

9. Is there a cancellation or return policy?

It’s always wise to be aware of the cancellation and return policies, if any. Many dresses are special orders and unable to be canceled. Ask about the terms and conditions to be prepared in case unforeseen circumstances arise.

10. Can I take photos of the dresses?

While some boutiques may have restrictions, many allow photos. Confirm the boutique’s policy so you can review the pictures later and share them with friends and family whose opinions you value.

As you embark on the journey of finding your dream dress, asking these questions during your wedding dress appointment will not only help you make an informed decision, but also ensure a smoother and more enjoyable shopping experience.

Remember, your bridal gown is a reflection of your unique style and personality, so take the time to find the perfect one that will make you feel truly special on your wedding day!

Sarie, from Madi Lane’s Memoirs collection, is an enchanting and whimsical wedding gown.

Her bodice has a classic sweetheart neckline, a favorite for brides. Delicately beaded spaghetti straps support the bodice, and they are decorated with some lace appliques as they transition from the bodice. Exposed boning provides a contemporary touch as well as plenty of support for brides with any size chest. Sarie’s bodice is unlined, giving her a slightly sultry vibe. Around back, a row of buttons closes up the gown, and the back neckline is a sophisticated and low V-shape.

Botanical-inspired lace appliques dance across the bodice and throughout the skirt. Motifs of flowers and leaves, decorated with sparkling beads, create a whimsical and ethereal feeling to Sarie. Her floral designs are light and delicate yet also highly exquisite. Lace peaks overtop of the neckline and helps soften the transition from bodice to straps. The thoughtful placement of the lace throughout the train ensures that walking down the aisle towards your love will be dramatic and memorable.

As the gorgeous flowers cascade down the gown and into the skirt, Sarie’s sparkle is really the star of the show. Her a-line skirt is constructed with layers of tulle and one very special layer of glitter mesh. The fine sparkles in the mesh give her a dazzling, all-over glow. Twirling around the dance floor with this stunning, sparkly gown might just be the highlight of your (and your videographer’s) night! A circular, chapel-length train finishes the the gown off, and it is gorgeously decorated with lacey flowers and leaves.

Sarie is available in Ivory/Mocha, Ivory/Latte, and Ivory/Ivory.

Sarie is an absolute must-try for brides who are embracing all things feminine, floral and nature-inspired in their wedding aesthetic. Sarie will enhance the vibes of any spring or summer wedding with her effortlessly romantic and airy design. Her stunning botanical details and delightfully sparkly skirt will have her working perfectly with outdoor venues like arboretums, wineries, and refined estates. Color palettes with sage green, baby pink, or dusty blue would look absolutely enchanting next to Sarie.

So much of Sarie is incredibly special; from her delicate straps, her contemporary exposed boning, and 3D lace appliques, there is nothing ‘basic’ about this gown. Her bodice is highly structured, so every bride will be snatched in at the waist before her dreamy A-line skirt begins. And Sarie’s skirt is nothing short of dazzling with its layer of sparkle mesh. But Madi Lane knows that not every bride wants all the sparkle, so Sarie can be ordered without her layer of glitter mesh! Between that customization and all her available color options, Sarie will be an easy yes for any bride that tries her on!
