Our Ike Behar Olive green suit “Dean” continues to be a popular choice for late summer and fall weddings.  Many couples do not need to see anything else for their wedding party, they are sold on this sharp olive color.  

Olive Green Suit Details

This Ike Behar suit is made with a very comfortable 100% worsted wool.  You will be surprised by how comfortable the fabric is.  

The suit also features a self-notch lapel top color and as with all Ike Behar suits and tuxedos, it is trim fit.  The two-button front, side vented jacket has double besom pockets and classy bone buttons. The olive jacket comes with matching slim fit pants and vest.

We also have a hunter green Ike Behar suit and brides and grooms chose that suit for their autumn and winter weddings.  What we noticed with both our olive and hunter green suits is some wedding parties chose black shirts for contrast.  

Alternatively, you could wear a white microfiber shirt with the olive suit but we think one of our subtle ivory microfiber shirts is an excellent choice.

When wearing an ivory or white shirt with this olive green suit, brown shoes are the perfect accompaniment.  However, if you are choosing a black shirt or black accessories, our matte black shoes would be a better fit with that look.

The fabric also has a handsome subtle weaved texture to it.  The two button front has a quarter inch of satin edging on the notch lapel and satin lined flap pockets.  The buttons are also covered in the grey satin that adorns the pockets and lapel.

How To Wear The Shale Grey Tuxedo

We often find that our wedding parties wear the matching grey vest and matching slim fit grey pants.  The touch of color most often given to this tuxedo comes from the bow tie, long tie, matching pocket square and more often than not, brown shoes.

We’ve rented this tuxedo many thousands of times and only on rare occasions have we seen customer wear black shoes with the tuxedo.  Our estimate is that 80% of the grooms and groomsmen wear brown shoes with this tuxedo and 20% will wear matte black shoes with it.  Either way, they always look great.

This beautiful tuxedo is perfect for prom, too!

Shirts

We believe white shirts look best with this tuxedo for two reasons: any ties or bow ties are more visible on a white background and the white shows a cleaner look.  On a few occasions, we have had grooms wear an ivory shirt with this tuxedo.

Other Brunswick Options

Allure Men has created an entire series of tuxedos called Brunswick.  If this grey version is not exactly what you are looking for, you are in luck. There are other grey tuxedos such as the beautiful granite grey Brunswick.

Occasions To Wear A Tuxedo Tailcoat

Although you will not often see people wearing a tuxedo tailcoat for weddings and formal events, we do dress several wedding parties and formal gala attendees in this evening wear every year.  We currently have a groom and his 9 groomsmen wearing this tuxedo for the wedding.  

Other occasions that we have rented full tail coats include debutante balls and fund raising galas in Philadelphia and New York.

Before COVID, the Academy of Music in Philadelphia held the Academy Ball for over 150 years.  Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo would rent a number of tail coats to the attendees and donors of the Academy Ball.  Of course, this special occasion called for a formal dress code than black tie.

On a few occasions, we’ve had fathers of the bride and groom wanting to wear tailcoats to their child’s wedding.  Not all brides and grooms were in agreement with dad’s choice!  

Our experience has been that on most such occasions, the bride or groom was able to convince dad to wear something more conventional.  However, our tuxedo and suit rental ordering system shows that on a few occasions, the bride and groom allowed dad to wear tails to the wedding, despite the wedding not officially being a white tie event!

White Tie Ensemble

As mentioned earlier in the blog, it is very traditional for ultra formal events to wear a white shirt, white bow tie, white vest, black tuxedo pants and patent leather shoes with tail coats.  Some choose a wing-tip collar, also referred to as a wing collar.  

In fact, the wedding party we mentioned earlier in this blog that is wearing tails to the wedding is doing just this.  Occasionally, we have had customers choose black satin bow ties and black vests with the tail coats.

Other Occasions For A Tuxedo Tailcoat

The owners of Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo were recently invited to a dinner party with a 1920s theme.  While unavailable to attend this event, the first thought was to wear a tuxedo tailcoat!  We have also dressed parties for 1920s themed weddings and tailcoats were the norm for these black tie events.

​About five years ago, we had a groom wear tailcoats.  He even wore a top hat and cane!

Another common customer group that we serve that wears tail coats are members of fraternal organizations.  You will often find Freemasons at our store looking to purchase tail coats since their organization often require this at their meetings or at a minimum at their annual gala.

Etiquette Advice

A prudent piece of advice Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo can give you is to ask questions to the hosts of a wedding or gala about what would be appropriate attire for the event.  Don’t be the only one showing up to the party in tail coats!

Our The Ritz by Ralph Lauren is a more luxurious version of our other tail coat tuxedo called Chaps by Ralph Lauren.  Both are wonderful options and will allow you to look stellar at any party.

This handsome and classy tuxedo jacket is a full black satin peak lapel and a one button. Aside from the satin buttons and lapels, the entire jacket is made with a very soft and beautiful velvet fabric.  Even the flap pockets are made of the same high-quality material.  

The design is a very slimming style and often looks best when tightly fitting.  Of course, you can go with a more relaxed fit by increasing the size of your jacket but we will discuss further which accessories may look best with this style.

Accessories and Pants

The designer often shows this tuxedo jacket worn with skinny-fit, black pants.  We wholeheartedly agree with wearing skinny fit pants.  However, we feel that if you are not comfortable in skinny fit pants, black slim fit tuxedo pants work just as well. Skinny fit pants are only made up to a certain waist size.  This limitation can cause a problem for those whose waist exceeds the manufacturer’s size availability.

On a few occasions, when we’ve had customers looking for a velvet tuxedo dinner jacket, they rent this jacket and wear it with dark jeans.  We believe, when it comes to jeans, slim fits always look the best!  We have seen our customers in photos after the events and we think they look smashing!

When one of our grooms, groomsmen or gala attendees wants to make a splash with this tuxedo jacket but his body type exceeds the largest skinny fit pants waist size, we often recommend that he wears our trim fit black tuxedo pants.  He will be more comfortable and will look just as fashionable.

Some customers choose our ultra-stretch black skinny fit pants. These pants take skinny-fit to a new level!  The material stretches and clings to the legs and body.  It offers comfort with this material and looks ultra modern because of how it follows the contour of the body.

If you want to keep the modern, dressier look throughout, we recommend our black microfiber shirt and either a black or silver long tie. We find that most of our customers, when choosing a white shirt, will also choose to wear a black bow tie with this tuxedo. Either will work for a formal setting.

When to Wear It

Since most of the fabric on this tuxedo jacket is velvet, it does have a heavier and warmer feel to it. We recommend wearing this tuxedo in cooler temperatures so that you do not overheat. Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo’s customer often wear this in late fall, winter and on rare occasion in early spring, when the temperatures are still cooler in the Philadelphia area.

When Not to Wear It

We do not recommend wearing velvet jackets in late spring or summer. Once the temperatures start to cool down, maybe October, then you can consider wearing this tuxedo jacket. Deciding when to wear this jacket also comes down to the individual’s preference and if you will be expected to wear it for a long time during the event.

Ask yourself if you get hot easily or are able to stay cool in a range of temperatures.  Some of our customer can’t wear anything form fitting or warmer, no matter what time of year it is.  If that is the case for you, then I would consider a similar one of our slim fit tuxedos like our Ike Behar Jackson.  This jacket is made of a microfiber wool blend that is very breathable, comfortable and cooler.

Men’s Velvet Blazer Trends

​Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo used to offer several different velvet tuxedo jackets but decided that this particular designer has made the best version.  When it comes to velvet dinner jackets, we feel that you need to stick to a designer who is known for making high quality formal garments.  

In the past, we’ve offered various velvet color jackets, all with high-quality velvet in varying styles.  However, our velvet suit jacket, men’s black velvet blazer and purple velvet jacket did not catch on!

Ralph Lauren offers this beautiful, full dress tuxedo with notch satin lapel and three button front.  The most formal way to wear this tuxedo is with a white backless vest, white bow tie, black pants and black patent leather shoes.

Just a few years ago, this full evening dress consisted of a white pique shirt, white pique bow tie and a white pique vest. Pique is a cotton fabric with a pattern that makes it appear quilted.  However, lately we are finding that designers in the formal wear industry are moving away from pique and substituting white satin bib or backless vest, a white satin bow tie and a Swiss pleated shirt.  

A Swiss pleated shirt has more of a ribbed texture to the front of it and on the cuffs, rather than traditional folded pleats.  This author really thinks a Swiss pleated shirt is very classy and wears one even with a standard length tuxedo jacket.

“Tails” as they are colloquially called, are used for the most formal of events and often in the evening.  At Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo, we have seen these tuxedos rented for Debutante balls, the Philadelphia Academy Ball (raising funds for the Philadelphia orchestra for over 150 years), and some very formal weddings.  

As a side note, the Academy Ball is now called the The Great Stages Gala and benefits the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Kimmel Center, and the Miller Theater.

We also had several wedding parties set a 1920s theme to their weddings and everyone dressed in tailcoats as they did in the roaring 20s.  A very fun theme!

If you are looking for a even more formal look, we suggest choosing our other Ralph Lauren tailcoat tuxedo called “Ritz”.  Historically, coat tails had peak lapels and the Ritz replicates that same satin peak for a more traditional formal look.

We especially like the comfortable fabric of this beautiful suit.  As with all Mark of Distinction suits, the jacket is trim fit, contains a self notch lapel and a two button front. The flap pockets, side vent style, and bone buttons add a touch of class to this already exquisite suit.

As is the case with most of our large inventory of suit rentals and purchases, this suit offers matching flat front pants and a vest using the same fine stretch wool material. The trim fit pants have an adjustable waistband and belt loops.  

Don’t be fooled by the wool fabric it is made of. This wool is ultra soft and comfortable and the Dawson can be easily accessorized for a number of fabulous styles from business casual to ultra-formal!

What We Love About The Black Suit Dawson

Despite being trim fit attire, this black dress suit has many built in ways of making it comfortable when wearing it.  The high-end, soft wool, amazing stretch fabric that offers flexibility for great range of movement, and the adjustable waist all contribute to the pleasure and comfort of wearing this suit.

Vest or No Vest

Should you wear a vest with this suit?  How formal is the event that you are attending? 

If the event is a formal special occasion, is being held at a formal location, and/or you want to dress to impress, we definitely recommend wearing the vest, as 3-piece suits would be appropriate for this type of affair.

You can also try matching with different accessories like a black or white shirt, different color or patterned long or bow ties, fancy cuff links, and patent leather shoes, to customize the look to the occasion.

On the other hand, if the venue is not that formal or if you are not interested in looking more formal than others, we suggest not wearing the vest.

A way to look more formal without the vest is to wear a white button down shirt and a coordinating tie and pocket square. If it’s more of a business-casual affair but you still want to look dressed up, we suggest the suit jacket, matching pants, a white button down shirt with the top one or two buttons unbuttoned and a nice pair of matte finished black shoes. With this particular style, you will be both comfortable but still look on-trend.

We dress thousands of grooms, groomsmen, fathers, ring bears and prom-goers every year.  Some are for formal weddings, others are for casual weddings. This Groom’s Guide to choosing your wedding attire gives you the four main decisions to make before setting out on your formal wear journey. 

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable with your wedding day attire and your wedding guest attire.  The good news is that it is much simpler than you think.

Many people do not wear suits and tuxedos on a regular basis so putting together your look can be a daunting task if you are not used to it.  Fortunately, we have a simple process to make this an easy and understandable process.

While we could go into the many pieces of a suit or tuxedo and accompanying accessories (we count upwards of 10) we will stick with the 4 main decisions you need to make to start. They are:

Groom’s Guide: Color

The first decision you need to make is the color of your suit or tuxedo.

Today you will see many different colors: blue tuxedo, many different shades of blues and grays, tan and brown, hunter and olive green, eggplant, cranberry, mulberry.  In fact, as I write this, I realized there are so many that there are too many to list! Suffice it to say, we can match any wedding color palette.

Our best advice about color is that if you do not have one already in mind, it is a very good idea to look at the different color options in person. Starting your search with Pinterest and Instagram are great ideas as these platforms will help you build your theme and find the best choices for the groom and the groomsmen attire. Photos, however, do not show the true color of the fabrics, nor can you tell the quality. Our professional opinion is you must go see them in person.

NOTE: The formality of your wedding and season will play a part in the color choices, too. For instance: summer weddings or warm weather weddings with a casual dress code lean toward light fabrics in tans, light blues and light grays; a semi-formal wedding in autumn could be a dark suit in hunter green or navy; formal events require an appropriate, classic look. Consider the type of wedding you are having when choosing the color.

When we first meet a bride and groom to discuss their vision, some even change their color choice once they start seeing all of the options!

Groom’s Guide: Suit or Tuxedo

The next decision to be made is whether you should wear a suit or tuxedo.  

The first step is to know the difference between a suit and tuxedo.  The short and simple answer is:

• • A suit has no satin on it and plastic buttons

• • A tuxedo often has satin lapels, satin lining the pockets, and satin buttons

There are a few exceptions where a tuxedo will not have any satin on it, but for the most part a tuxedo has satin, a suit does not.  Read our blog on the difference between a tuxedo and suit.

Many of the higher end, three-piece suit options have equally beautiful fabric and design so it’s not always a given that today’s modern groom must wear a tuxedo. One of these suits may be perfectly acceptable.

Some of the more budget-friendly suits will not have fabric as luxurious and comfortable as a tuxedo so in those cases, you will see and feel a difference in fabric.  

NOTE: If you are getting married at a very elegant venue, we suggest wearing a tuxedo to match the formality of the location (and the bride’s dress). If the wedding theme is a black-tie wedding, you must wear a classic black tuxedo. Otherwise, your personal style and preference can dictate and therefore if you do not like tuxedos, choose a nice wedding suit.

Groom’s Guide: Lapel

Suits and tuxedos have three types of lapels: notch, peak and shawl. 

 

 

 

 

Most brides and grooms can quickly decide on which lapel they prefer most.  Once customers see the three types of lapels in photos or in person, 80% of brides and grooms usually have one absolute favorite lapel, a second one they don’t mind, and a third they don’t like at all!  That’s been our experience when working with brides and grooms and it easily narrows down the choices.

A notch lapel has a “notch-like” cut out on the lapel and is the most common look for a business suit.  This is the most common and contemporary lapel brides and grooms tend to choose.

A peak lapel has a point to it (think peak of a mountain) and points straight up on each side of the jacket.  While this lapel is not as common as the notch lapel, we have been seeing it become more popular in the past three years.

A shawl lapel has rounded edges and in our experience is the least common for a wedding.  The look, while a little more old fashioned, is quite sophisticated.  About 5% of our grooms and fathers choose a shawl lapel tuxedo.  We think it’s a fine choice but after seeing this lapel, we’ll let you decide if it’s the right one for you. One of our more popular shawl lapel tuxedos has been our Brunomagli charcoal gray tuxedo with black shawl lapel.

Not to worry about making a lapel decision.  We find that brides and grooms easily know which one they like best.

Now that you’ve chosen the color, suit/tuxedo, and the lapel, the next decision is shoes.

Grooms Guide: Shoes

Depending on which color suit or tuxedo you chose and your preference for shoes, there are a lot of choices to be had for shoes.

Currently, Darianna® Bridal & Tuxedo offers seven different pairs of shoes. They range from black matte, black patent leather, black and white wingtip, and two different shades of brown.

 

For several years, many grooms have been choosing brown shoes when wearing a gray, tan, and blue suit and tuxedo. This is a popular choice and creates wonderful wedding photos. Some grooms choose black shoes when wearing gray tuxedos and suits. Any suits or tuxedos that are gray with black lapels, we highly recommend wearing black shoes.

 

SHIRTS / ACCESSORIES : 

black tie / classic tuxedo – white dress shirt, white pocket square, black bow tie give a pop of color and is an easy way perfect look.

Patent leather shoes are high gloss, shiny like a mirror; matte finish shoes have no gloss. The decision between shiny and non-glossy is very easy: personal preference. 

The other thing to consider is that patent leather shoes look more formal.  Therefore, if you are going for a more formal look, the best option is the black patent leather shoes.  It is more common to wear patent leather shoes with a tuxedo and matte finish shoes with a suit.  It is perfectly acceptable to wear matte shoes with a tuxedo if you do not like shiny shoes however, we don’t often see patent leather shoes being worn with a suit.

Now that you have the overall look of groom’s outfit chosen, you have just a few other things to consider: shirt style, long or bow tie, vest, cuff links and studs, and pocket squares.  These remaining items are not as complicated to decide on.
